Snow White Blog – Week 2

Hi all, my names Tina and this year I’m playing the roll of Greedy Dwarf. I am loving it because it means I can eat onstage….bring on the stage snacks!!

This week in the land of panto has been brilliant as always…

I have totally immersed myself in my role of Greedy Dwarf, including demolishing lots of bourbon biscuits. Ive decided to go totally method with this part! 😀

However for this week i’ve had to bury my inner dwarf deep as all us dwarves are in disguise for the opening number! Don’t say anything, sshh Its our little secret!!

Monday evening started with Mr Mikey B and Lady Kate Sanders teaching the opening number followed by Madam Wendy Lady putting us through our paces with the choreography…. Its been a good few months since my dancing shoes have been on but once the music kicked we all started to move our feet!

Now Wednesday, Lady Kate and Mr Mikey B were in charge again to go through the astounding harmonies that create possibly the most spine tingling sounds of….a song….i’m not giving anything away, you’ll just have to come along and hear for yourself!!

Don’t miss out as this show is already sounding and looking amazing in just 2 weeks- imagine what it will be like come January!!

All the details for tickets are below

See you all at the show- feel free to bring me some snacks! 😉

Greedy

Sleeping Beauty Blog – The Final Post.

And so it seems Panto is over for another year (oh no it isn’t….!), as we bid a fond farewell to Sleeping Beauty 2016!

The end of show week is always a little bittersweet, as no one really wants it to be over, especially after all the hard work – but the truth is (for my creaking joints at least) that you are more than a little cream-crackered by the end of Sunday’s matinee and would happily hibernate like a bear for a couple of weeks!

We also have the job of the theatre ‘get out’ to look forward to on the Sunday evening, so work looming large on the Monday morning (or Tuesday if you were sensible enough to book an extra day’s holiday) can almost seem like a rest!

However once you’ve had a bit of a break (24 hours usually does it!) and finally get around to tidying all your dressing room bits away at home, the post show blues can really set in. How are you suppose to fill your time without all those innuendos and panto traditions?! Thankfully, we are traditionally the last group in the area to perform their panto, which means we never have to wait long before we get going with the Summer show auditions. This year it was a particularly short break, as it’s only been one week!

Luckily for some of us there is always the performance at St Elizabeth’s Centre in Much Hadham to look forward to. This is where we take an abridged version of the panto and a trimmed down cast and perform it to the most wonderful audience on the following Sunday. I don’t think they realise that we get as much, if not more, enjoyment out of it as they do – with the sheer joy of having one last chance to perform it!

We rehearsed the abbreviated version on the Wednesday after show week and due to prior commitments we had a couple of casting changes to work through – the Gediking sisters really came up trumps for us and took on the role of the Prince and the Queen (even if they were covering one of their own in the case of one role!). Much fun was had by all at the rehearsal and lots of show week silliness was relived.

When Sunday’s performance rolled around we suddenly found ourselves ‘one sparkle short of a twinkle’ literally; as we had a fairy who’d been struck down by Malevolent, to reduce the power of three! Heroically, and rather passionately Carla offered to step in (and was amazing!). A full spare fairy costume appeared from somewhere (everyone has this sort of thing laying around at home – just in case – don’t they?!) and the deal was sealed, we rustled up a fairy spell book and everything! This left us in a bit of a quandary about the queen’s role, which Carla was originally covering, but the gorgeously radiant Jo (and bump) filled the void and did an outstanding job at such short notice (we took good care of her on stage); it was a beautiful sight to see Jo stood with the baby Aurora and crib in the opening scene, as it really won’t be long until Warren and Jo are recreating that magic for real!

Huge thanks to Becky, Carla and Jo for being such superstars and making sure the show really did go on; and to Mike ‘Keys of Steel’ Benyon and Jivin’ John Fossey for rocking out the tunes! The lovely Fay also came to make sure we looked decent, knew the choreography changes and then turned her hand to the technical operation of the lighting and sound board, such a multi tasker – she also took some cheeky ‘wing side’ pictures!

Tired, but elated, we gathered for tea, sandwiches and cake afterwards – kindly provided by the lovely team at St Elizabeth and celebrated the end of a wonderful run!

Now you would be forgiven for thinking that we would all take some time off now, but no! We were back on it Monday evening, as we met to read through the script for our next show ‘Urinetown’! Don’t be put off by the title, it really is a corker of a script with dark, comedy twists and a cracking score.

So as we prepare to audition for our next show I will say goodbye and thank you for reading all of the blogs we have written during Sleeping Beauty. If you are wondering how you will cope without our regular updates, never fear, I’m sure we won’t be able to contain ourselves and we’ll keep you updated on our journey through the next lot of rehearsals! So watch this space!

Sleeping Beauty Blog – The Get Out

IT’S A WRAP!… As our brilliant last audience cheerfully exited the theatre, singing our finale song as they went, and the curtains came down on another super show week in SMP land, so began our “Get out”

While cast were busy folding cloths, our FOH team were dismantling displays and taking down “Urinetown” posters. Back stage more cast folded away their costumes and cleared out the dressing rooms, while our props team filled their cars to the brim, and our incredible crew were shifting set and lighting bars, oooh and sweeping our confetti filled pit too.

During all the hard work, our lovely Fairy Merriweather and “thank you’s” mistress, Marian Lynch, kindly presented a very long list of super special people with chocolates, flowers and thank you cards. People without whom we couldn’t do what we do.

As fate would have it, in came our review from “Sardines” the Am-Dram magazine, and it was full to the brim of lovely comments and positive feedback, yay, which only encouraged the already high emotions of the cast, production team, committee and crew. As they all hugged goodbye and patted each other firmly on the back, a feeling of pride filled the room.

Six performances later, to nearly 1500 people this week, ending on a sell-out, we are all ready for our beds…but one things for sure, we’ll be heading off the land of nod with HUGE smiles on our faces.

To everyone who came to see the show we offer you a massive heartfelt thank you, without you we couldn’t continue to do what we love doing. THANK YOU!

Sleeping Beauty Blog – Show Week

So a little about me, I first joined smp for zombie prom back in 2010, and haven’t looked back since. We are more than an amateur dramatics company, we are a family and I think that’s why we manage to retain the same talent show after show!
I’m delighted to be a member of the chorus and an evil minion in Sleeping Beauty. So here I am at our after show party writing a blog!
As you have already read blogs about our fabulous opening night I thought I would cover show week socials. So on Thursday night a few of us went to a karaoke bar and partied after opening night, the attendance of this is generally a lot higher but a few of us have been hit by the much dreaded man flu (yes it is that bad!) so decided an early night was needed in order to be at our best for our lovely audiences.
Friday night is traditionally curry night so after the show we all head down to Aladdin’s who look after us so marvelously twice a year. After lots of chat and lovely food we head home and rest, ready for 2 shows on Saturday.
Between shows there is also a lot of food (ok you might spot a theme here, we like to eat) and general chit chat and chill time for the cast before our evening performance. A special mention must go out to our crew who provide us with some entertaining calls…. There was some very questionable accents through the tannoy this afternoon.
So on to the main event…. The after show party! We all like to let our hair down and enjoy a good boogie and a few Bevvies after the shows. There is also the small matter of ‘the awards’, these celebrate little mess ups that the cast have made throughout show week including costume malfunctions and script adaptions, and the notorious “Cow and pig” award for the company member who hammed it up the most (on or off stage)
As we have a show on Sunday we pack up at a reasonable time and rest up for our Sunday matinée. Emotions are running high after spending a week with the ‘SMP fam’ and the finale of the Sunday matinee is always full of tears that all of our hard work is over. But fear not, read through for our summer show Urinetown is only a matter of days away! Hurrah 🙂

Sleeping Beauty Blog – Opening Night!

Oh how joyous! It’s my turn to write for the Sleeping Beauty Blog – and this time, it’s Opening Night!! After spending far too long sticking sparkles and glitter on my face, it was time to take to the stage as Fairy Fauna – the ditsy, blonde, ‘one sparkle short of a twinkle’ fairy…and well, I’m finding this character an absolute delight to play!

I am incredibly lucky to have the support of such a wonderful cast that has helped me to quickly step in to this role. I would like to personally thank the wonderful Flora (Lynzey) and magical Merriweather (Marian) for helping me through the past couple of weeks… and our brilliant director Christopher O’Shea (18 years later and we are still performing together Chris!)… Oh, and of course, our very own SMP fairy Jo McWilliams, who has been a fabulous support. After finding out the great news that Jo is expecting her first little ‘cherub’ I was absolutely delighted to be asked to take on her role of Fairy Fauna. Jo has really helped me to bring so much life, love and laughter to this character and I hope she is pleased with the result.

Anyway, back to last night…The fairies certainly have their work cut out trying to protect Princess Aurora, making sure her and Prince Rupert meet (and fall totes in-love), fighting the mystical malevolent, saving Prince Rupert from Boggers and Sniffle, keeping the peace between Presto and Sampson, defeating Malevolent, making sure our Sleeping Beauty wakes up and ensuring everyone lives happily every after… and of course remaining fabulous the whole way through… Oh my Disney! Thankfully we have magic wands to help us through… and after last night, I am certain they have real power… the speed that Rupert’s chains flew off was quite astonishing – thankfully, no band members were hurt in the process, although, our BSL interpreter did have to duck! Oops!

This show is jam packed full of fun, energy and lots of fairy sparkle –  Get booking those tickets… otherwise, Merriweather will be round to give you a good shake! x

*Some of our cast decided to celebrate after the show last night with a few drinks and a spot of karaoke, see the pictures.

We’ve had some great feed back so far too:

Sleeping Beauty Blog – Community Night

Guten Tag from me, Rebecca Gediking – the Little German! (this is a well known character in the original ‘Sleeping Beauty’ fairytale so I’m told… Yah!)

Tonight was SMP’s opening night of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ by Warren Mc Williams for charity and community groups and what a great night it was!
It was so much fun performing and bringing the show to life with a fantastic audience, a fab band and a wonderful group of people!
Tonight we really experienced the fear, joy and exhilaration of performing live. Cast and crew members were helping each other with quick costume changes, hairstyles, make up, set changes and microphones! There were times when we were running up and down stairs and around the theatre to make it on time for scenes and musical numbers…We loved every minute!
As we hung up our costumes and packed away our make up, hairspray and millions of hair grips, we all had huge grins on our faces and we can’t wait to be back in the theatre to perform again tomorrow!
Thank you to our audience members for being good fun and participating in the pantomime jokes, cheering and of course booing our baddies Malevolent, Boggers and Sniffles! We hope all of our audience members will be as good as you were tonight!
If you haven’t booked your tickets yet… I can only assume you’ve been asleep for a loooong time, we understand that this can happen – but     you wouldn’t want to miss this show… Oh no you wouldn’t!
Auf Wiedersehen for now! Xx

Sleeping Beauty Blog – Get in and Band Call

Hi, Carl here, playing the King. A lovely crisp winter’s morning is a beautiful start to a great day. First of all, band call; when the band and the cast come together for the first time.

OMG it sounds amazing thanks to the talented Mike B., Chris W., Tim H., Steve R. and John F. They all rock!

Then off to the Intimate we go for tech rehearsal and, more importantly, the inevitable pizza party. A ridunculous amount of food ordered and while stuffing pizza in our gobs it’s truly the quietest SMP have ever been. Pizza rocks!

The back stage guys have worked tirelessly getting the fabulous set and lighting all sorted. They all rock!

The Intimate theatre is a great venue but as the name suggests the stage isn’t as big as the rehearsal space we’re used to. But with the guidance of our fabulous choreographer, Fay, and brilliant director, Chris, it’s all looking awesome. Fay and Chris, you rock!

I am so happy that I get to share this incredible time with my partner, Andy, who is joining SMP for the first time. Looking forward to tomorrow when the set, lighting and costumes all come together; it’s gonna be spectacular.

This is my sixth show with SMP and I am lucky to be involved with such a loveable group of talented people who I am proud to call my friends. SMP rock!

Sleeping Beauty Blog – Final Week 17

Hi Guys, Prince Rupert here looking forward to seeing you all next week in the wonderful world of SMP Pantoland!

After directing Bugsy Malone in the Summer I enjoyed working with this talented, super fun unbelievably nice group of people I thought I would join the dark side and become a cast member.

Monday we were in the very capable hands of Fay our amazingly creative Choreographer and Mike our very talented master of the keys Musical Director. We spent the night ‘fine tuning’ the musical numbers (which are not be missed) so they are in the best shape they can be for show week. Wednesday we were back with our visionary Director Chris for our last run before we get into the theatre so excitement is starting to show throughout the cast. However we are missing one cast member…… YOU.

Please don’t miss out on this wonderful show which will have you cheering, booing, hissing and dancing in the aisles.

See you next week Haydn

Sleeping Beauty Blog – Week 16

Hi there my name is Andy Jordan and it’s my turn to update you with the latest Blog. Before I do that I would like to tell you all a little bit about me. I’m the newest and oldest member of the cast in this years panto Sleeping Beauty and it’s my first ever performing role.

By day I’m a flight attendant for EasyJet and I also teach Zumba in my spare time so I know what it’s like to be in the lime light. I’m also a bit of a philanthropist organising and taking part in many Zumba fundraising events for local charities .

I’m part of a very impressive chorus being choreographed by the wonderful Fay Kemal. We had a short break over Christmas and New Year giving us all time to learn the lines practise the harmonies polish the dance moves Carl my partner, who’s playing the King, and I even managed a trip to Copenhagen as a Christmas treat.

When we got together for a first rehearsal of 2016 everybody’s hard work could be seen. I’m having such a great time with SMP the whole cast and crew have been welcoming and friendly.

Well show week is fast approaching I’m both nervous and excited to be on stage for the first time with a wonderful group of people who I know will be good friends for years to come.

Sleeping Beauty Blog – Week 15

This weeks blog comes from our Fairy Flora – Lynzey Cooper

Hello boys and girls how are you all today?

I am very excited to be playing Fairy Flora in SMP’s Sleeping Beauty, a role I have been dreaming about since I fell in love with the world of Panto many years ago. Fairy Flora is my most challenging role yet, as the Fairies are in a majority of the scenes, with a lot of lines to learn. We often speak in rhyme, so need to make sure we are word perfect, or it just would not make sense! Warren (Dame Nelly), has really outdone himself with creating the rhyming vernacular and it has been a lot of fun learning them!

I have just returned from a magical trip to Florida which included a visit to Disney World. I was thrilled to meet Aurora in Epcot and she ‘hopes we all have a wonderful time this Christmas’. I packed my script for some inflight reading to keep up with my lines and was very excited to read last week’s blog from our lovely Fairy Merriweather to keep up to date with rehearsals.

On Monday our fabulous choreographer Fay, taught the Finale dance to the cast. The show has now been completely set which is so exciting as now we can keep running the show to make sure it is perfect for opening night, which is only a month away…eeek!!!

On Thursday we had our Christmas meal, organised by Stacy Gilbert and the social committee. It was such a wonderful evening where cast members, old and new came together for some lovely grub and a catch up. We even had some games to play this year, along with the traditional secret Santa (I will enjoy my Disaronno very much!!) to add some extra joy to the evening.

Our last rehearsal before the Christmas break was a full costume run of the show. Many of us then attended a Carol’s by Candle light service, where we sang our hearts out and enjoyed joining in with all those difficult descants!

We will be taking a break over Christmas and New Year, so our next blog will be brought to you in January by Andy Jordan.

On behalf of St. Monica’s Players I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a truly Magical Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Remember, if you are stuck for gifts this Christmas… why not buy someone a ticket to see Sleeping Beauty details here

Sleeping Beauty Blog – Week 14

This week our blog comes from our choreographer Fay Kemal, over to you Fay…

Fay here!! And so happy to be choreographing my 10th panto for smp. Having joined SMP in 2001 I have choreographed many summer shows and pantos, but panto is my fave!!

The comedy and humour makes it such fun to create routines for. I am so very lucky to be working with a great production team Chris O’ Shea and Mike Benyon. Our life is made easier by having yet another creative and innovative script written by my brother Warren McWilliams to work with.

We have the most talented hardworking performers at rehearsals and so nothing like a menagerie!!! Special thanks to my wonderful dancers. They are a dream and bring my dances to life. I am very grateful for all their hard work and dedication. Thank you guys.

The principal characters are almost off script and we had our first run in costume this Sunday. As well as choreographing I also costume the show along side my trusty partner Ellie Goss. Everyone helps us by putting their finishing touches to their costumes and sewing a thread when needed. SMP are a real family who help to pull together to put on amazing shows.

Everyone puts in 100% effort and commitment and that’s what show business is all about. Rehearsals are now running down before Christmas, but the hard work does not stop for these guys. Scripts, lyrics, and dance moves will still be rehearsed over the break. Fun, frolics, and laughter can be found at every rehearsal.

It’s not to late to buy tickets for our Beautiful panto, a nice gift for Christmas or a fun evening out. Hope to see you there, cheer and boo and have a ball!! You can buy them here.

Sleeping Beauty Blog – Week 13

Hi, I’m Mike Benyon and I am musical director for SMP’s production of Sleeping Beauty.

Doing panto is not a new thing for this old stager. In fact, having joined SMP in 1992 this is my 24th successive year being involved with panto, either as musical director or as a member of the band.

So how does this match up with the previous 23? Well it’s right up there with them! What I love about panto is that there is so much scope for SMP to do things its own way. A book show uses the same script and book every time and there are even expected ways that each scene should be set; so much so that it’s almost like painting by numbers. With panto we are able to use our own script, once again beautifully written by the esteemed Mr Warren McWilliams, choose our own songs and then the director has the chance to mould his vision using the supreme talent at hand!

From a musical point of view this year’s panto is a departure from last year’s rock fest. While Aladdin contained a myriad of songs by Alice Cooper, Journey, 90s power ballads and other head banging classics, this year we have filled the show with more contemporary pieces. Still, I am very appreciative of youtube as most of this year’s tunes are not normally in this 55 year old’s gramophone collection.

Still, what makes it so special for me and why I continue to throw myself into SMP productions is that we have the people in our cast to turn songs of any genre into show stoppers. We are very lucky this year to have the lovely Eleanor Joy and the suave Haydn Boxall as Sleeping Beauty and the Prince. Their rendition of a classic from an oh-so slightly successful film of the last year or so had everyone crooning with admiration last week.

With less than two months to go until opening night last week’s rehearsals were a really good chance to see what shape the show is in. Monday night was supposed to be a dance re-cap but our amazing choreographer Fay Kemal was struck down with bubonic plague and missed her first rehearsal in 47 years. However, we circumnavigated this potential disaster by taking the opportunity to do a re-cap of all the songs. What was a real bonus for me is that while I was scrabbling around trying to find my notes about who is singing which harmony everybody in the cast has remembered them anyway. This makes my job so much easier and means that we can now concentrate on fine tuning other parts of the show knowing that the songs are almost ready for performance.

Wednesday night was great as it was the first run through of Act 1. Having not seen any of the acting so far it really brought home what a great script we have and gave a real insight into the hilarious characters that are developing. The Minions Boggers and Sniffle are played by Luke Clow and Sasha Newton. While anyone who has seen Luke on stage before knows what an accomplished performer he is, especially when making a complete fool of himself, this time he is joined by Sasha, who is playing her first main role for SMP. Her characterisation is a complete revelation and the two of them already have a real chemistry on stage.

As you will have heard in last week’s blog, we recently received the news that Warren McWilliams and his cherubic wife Jo are expecting their first baby. While this is fabulous news it did leave us with a missing fairy, something that no panto wants. However, last Wednesday’s rehearsal saw Jo’s part being filled by Wendy Cooper. Having played my wife in Our House it must be nice for Wendy not to

need to be aged half a century. Wendy has clearly slotted beautifully into the role alongside the sublimely talented Marian Lynch and Lynzey Cooper.

Wednesday’s rehearsal also made it abundantly clear that we have a great director in Chris O’Shea. Chris has played roles in a number of SMP shows and I am still amazed by his performance in Our House when he had more costume and character changes than most people have lines. He has a great aura of confidence and this certainly has been transmitted to the cast who at this early stage seem confident of what they are doing. And of course anyone who has followed SMP in the last 14 years since joining the group for SMP’s 2001 production of Jesus Christ Superstar knows how lucky we are to have Fay Kemal as choreographer.

I can’t finish this blog without mention of my band. While they are not yet involved with the show, I know that they can be relied on to turn my vision into reality. John Fossey, Chris Wall, Steve Rogers and Tim Hall must have performed in around 50 SMP shows between them. The band call, when it all comes together the week before the show, is always the most special rehearsal of them all. Bring it on!

Sleeping Beauty Blog – Week 12

This weeks blog comes from our Merriweather – Marian Lynch.

As one of the oldest members of SMP (when did that happen?!) I’m not really sure what a blog is, but I figure it’s a bit like a diary entry, right? I picked a corker of a week to get to tell you what we’ve been up to, there has been so much going on – it’s a veritable smorgasbord! I’m playing Fairy Merryweather in this year’s panto and it’s a character that is close to my heart for many reasons (despite the fact I’m furious that she is described as a battle axe in the script!); she features a lot in my Disney history and I probably have more in common with her character than I care to admit!

Sleeping Beauty was my first SMP show back in January 2006, so it’s very special to me, I was part of the chorus all those years ago, so I’ve been very patient waiting to get my hands of this role: a tiara, wings, a wand and more sparkles than you can shake a stick at? What’s not to love! Obviously the fabulous script will make this year superior (thought I’d better give Warren a mention)! At the end of last week Jo B, Bex and myself spent sometime in Disneyland Paris, getting in the Christmas spirit. One of my favourite things about the park is the castle, which just happens to be Sleeping Beauty’s and it’s pink! I’ve always loved the stain glass window that features the three fairies and the castle looks beautiful with all its lights. I convinced myself the trip was necessary character development and it’s also made me very excited for the Enfield parade of light on Sunday!

This week’s rehearsals were all about the scenes, so our talented chorus and dancers got a well deserved week off. On Monday we went through the last of the scenes. Ellie (Aurora) spent most of the rehearsal lying down under a blanket! She tried to convince us that it was part of the role, but she looked incredibly comfortable and snuggly for someone under the spell of a wicked fairy! It’s the sign of a good show when we all have so much fun in rehearsals, the laughter and ad-libbing doesn’t stop and Chris (our fabulous director) is incredibly patient with all our naughtiness!

On Wednesday we ran through most of the scenes again and Kate introduced us to her glowing Orb! She really is very talented at making her costumes and props and despite telling us it was a ‘work in progress’ it already looked fantastic and quite eerie.

Fay, Ellie and Debbie were all putting more hard work in to sorting out costumes for us all on Wednesday too. It goes without saying that my fellow cast are all hugely talented, but the show wouldn’t be half as good without all the effort that the production team, techies and other backstage grafters put in.

The three fairies are obviously a close knit trio and I was thrilled to find out that I would be working with Lynzey and Jo Mac to sprinkle that fairy magic. We are all great friends so it was an easy relationship to fall into. We’ve had so much fun in rehearsals and we have enjoyed all the overacting it has afforded us!

Now this is the best bit, as I’ve been lucky enough to be given permission to divulge a little secret! Let me set the scene: Two years ago our wonderful friends Warren and Jo had their own fairytale wedding and it seems now the next chapter of their happy story is about to begin! THEY’RE HAVING A BABY!!!!! It seems quite fitting that our panto starts with a baby in a crib, but I hope there will be no magical shenanigans for their own little prince or princess! Unfortunately this means that Jo is no longer able to play the role of Fairy Fauna, but I’m sure their happy news more than makes up for it!

As sorry as Lynzey and me are to lose Jo from our cheeky trio, we are very happy to say we won’t be fighting Malevolent’s forces on our own – we welcome our lovely Wendy – who will be stepping into the role. Jo and Wendy spent this week’s rehearsals sharing information about the part and doing the scenes together, I’m only sorry that we can’t have both of them! Thank you so much to Wendy for taking on the part of Fauna at the last minute and I’m sure you will all join me sending huge congratulations to Warren and Jo on their happy news!

So finally I’d like to sign off saying that I’m having the best time rehearsing this year with this crazy bunch, so please don’t miss out on this fantastic production – GET YOUR TICKETS!!!

Sleeping Beauty Blog – Week 11

This week our blog comes from our writer and dame, Nurse Nelly, Warren McWilliams. Take it away Warren:

So here’s my blog post!

This week we set about learning another one of our dances whilst those principles not involved went through our dialogue adding more jokes to the already gag laden script. We’ve got a great cast this year, a totally cherubtastic selection peppered with talent.

On Wednesday we set the magic hat scene and ran over more of the dialogue, evoking a sense of Deja-vu, it does mean though that nearly the whole show has been set now. All that’s left to do is to polish it until it sparkles like the Koh-I-Noor in SMP’s crown.

This year I’m treading new ground as I’m filling the gargantuan boots of our regular dame Terry Aylott whilst he has a brief hiatus. It’s all a bit nerve wracking and I’m sure everything won’t go as planned but, he’s a dazzling dame and a thoroughly nice bloke so he won’t show any schadenfreude.

Thankfully I’ve had the privilege to have watched his brilliant performances numerous times so I’ll be doing my very best impersonation of him and hopefully be his doppelganger come show week.

I’m ascertaining that there’s more to being a dame than meets the eye, the décolletage, the unexpected ad libs, the audience participation, the greasepaint, the wigs and of course the dresses! Thanks to the great support from everyone at SMP though, I’m sure everything will be peachy clean come show week.

Thanks to the hard work of our creative team the dialogue is slicker than a deep fried donner kebab, the dance numbers are sharper than Stephen Fry’s wit, and the songs more melodic than a chorale of Disney Princesses.

I love panto, you get a creative carte blanch so literally anything goes and Christmas for me wouldn’t be the same without it. Looking ahead, I’m directing SMP’s next show, the totally unique show Urinetown, don’t be put off by the title, it’s great and one not to be missed. Check out our website here to find out more about it.

One thing’s for sure though, this Panto’s going to be hotter than a wahacca chilli, fresher than an Italian stallion and more fun than chasing a herd of antelope whilst riding a henry hoover! You can book your tickets for the #BestPantoEver here.

I’d like to finish my blog post with a picture of Nick Quye because…well, just because. Here you go:

Sleeping Beauty Blog – Week 10

This week’s post comes from our Princess Aurora herself, Ellie!

Hello one and all, and welcome to the 10th installment (10th!) of our blog for ‘Sleeping Beauty’! I have loved reading the weekly installments written by other SMP beauties so far, and now the blogging baton has been handed over to yours truly (eeek)!

I can’t quite believe that we have been in rehearsals for 10 weeks – how time flies – or that I have actually been able to spend the last 10 weeks swanning around every Monday and Wednesday evening pretending to be a princess. Yes, it’s something that lots of us like to pretend to be in our spare time anyway, but as I am playing Princess Aurora in this glorious production I am actually allowed to indulge in this fantasy in a public place without people looking at me like I am a lunatic. And I have been enjoying every single sparkly second of it.

So, what does being a princess every Monday and Wednesday evening actually involve, I hear you ask. Well, along with perfecting my best sleepy face and partaking in the general merriment and mischief that is SMP, this week it was singing and scene recaps.

On Monday night we were in the ever capable hands of our lovely MD Mike Benyon and, I have to say, this pantomime is sounding absolutely wonderful. Mikey B has done us proud with the harmonies (particularly the big YEAH at the end of every number), we have some super talented singers in our cast and the production team really have chosen an excellent range of songs, from current chart hits to 90s classics and the odd sprinkle of Disney magic. We finished our evening with a very rousing rendition of Happy Birthday for King Carl.

Wednesday evening saw the principles recapping the scenes we have set so far and setting a couple of new ones with our wonderful director Chris O’Shea. I love these kinds of rehearsals: it’s so enjoyable to see how everyone has been bringing their characters to life and the room is always full of laughter. It’s also a great opportunity to revert to being 5 years old when pretending to be an audience member – I really like to commit to my heckling. Upstairs, Fay and the other half of our awesome costume department, Ellie Goss, were kitting out the lovely chorus with various costumes for the show. I was lucky enough to have a sneaky peak and I can guarantee that this pantomime is going to be full of colour, sparkles and joy.

Talking of colour, sparkles and joy, that is how I would have to sum up my time so far with SMP. This is my first panto with them after joining for their last production of Bugsy Malone, and I have never met such a talented, fun and welcoming bunch of people in my life. During a week when the weather has turned so miserable that I have been tempted to wear my Billabong wetsuit underneath all of my clothes as an extra layer of insulation, I can think of nothing else that would get me so excited about heading out into the blustery London night twice a week than spending time with this lovely lot. This really is going to be the #bestpantoever with the #bestpeopleever. Make sure you don’t miss it!

Sleeping Beauty Blog – Week 9

This weeks blog is brought to you by Rebecca Gediking a.k.a. SpongeBob SquarePants! (Cue song…)

A bit about me: Sadly I don’t really live in a pineapple under the sea but I do live in SMP land. SMP has become a huge part of my life. I joined the group 7 years ago and haven’t missed a show in that time! I’ve been a fairy and a number of crazy characters and always had a blast. What makes SMP so special is that we all get on so well and that we have a lot of fun! We work hard to make our shows a success and we hope you will enjoy the debut of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ by Warren McWilliams.

Without further adieu, here is the next instalment of the adventures of SMP:

We began the week by dancing to the theme tune of yours truly and a number of my cartoon colleagues joined in with theirs, there was skipping, jumping and jazz hands galore, led by the marvellous Mrs Fay Kemal.

Our next rehearsal saw us learning new songs with some cracking harmonies taught by our very own master maestro, Mikey B! Our raucous laughter in this rehearsal led to Ofsted paying us a visit to make sure we were working hard… Uuum…

After the inspection, the merriment continued with birthday celebrations, cake, marshmallows, singing and sparklers!! The SMP family also decided to club together and buy a whopping 22 lottery tickets for the draw on Friday eek!

Our lotto win was the subject of conversation at our post rehearsal pub visit – should we buy the Intimate Theatre? Should we quit our day jobs and sun ourselves on lilo’s or drink cocktails in a hammock? Should we build Antsterdam? Hampsterdam?

The list goes on… But fear not, even if we win and go somewhere sunny, we would never miss our fabulous panto (oh no we wouldn’t!) and neither should you… Sparkle on over and book your tickets here!

Sleeping Beauty Blog – Week 8

This week our blog comes from Kate Russell, who is playing the evil Malevolent in our Sleeping Beauty. Find her wicked words below:

This week has been a time for all the little ghosties and ghoulies to come out to play, so of course this is my favourite time of year! My name is Kate and I am playing the evil fairy Malevolent in our production of Sleeping Beauty in January. I am very lucky to have been in 7 previous pantomimes with SMP, but I have to say this is looking to be the best one yet. I’ve played a few princesses and fairies, but it’s so much fun being bad!

Thanks to the writing talent of Warren McWilliams, and the direction of Christopher O’Shea, as the evil villain of Sleeping Beauty, I get to push people around, slap them round the head and laugh evilly… a lot! So this is great fun for me when we rehearse, although maybe not for Sasha and Luke who play my minions Sniffles and Boggers, as I think they always leave more than a little bit bruised.

Due to my being the baddie, there are several full cast numbers which I am not in. Normally this would feel a bit alien, and I would be a disappointed to not be in a number, but the amazing part is that I get to watch the cast perform them instead. The talent of the cast is truely exceptional, and the arrangements by our Musical Director Mike Benyon, and routines by our Choreographer Fay Kemal, are second to none.

This show will be rather special for me, as I have the great honour of co-writing one of my numbers with our MD Mike. He has written several songs for our shows before, but this will be my first time. I’m very excited, and just hope I can help to create something worthy of the show. We’ll be meeting up soon to make some magic, so you’ll have to see the show to hear how it turns out. J

As it has been Halloween this week, all of our cast members have been connecting with their dark sides, and came dressed in some amazing costumes for our Halloween party. We had some stunning decorations, food, and music, and each time a song from one of our previous shows came on, we were all up dancing the routine, loving every second of it. Although I loved being dressed up, flying around on a broom, the best thing about the party was that it was with all my fiends, I mean friends, from SMP. They say you can choose your friends but not your family, but in this case, we’ve become both, and I wouldn’t change them for the world (no matter what I say when in character).

So here is where I say goodbye. Or, in the words of Malevolent, ‘Oh be quiet you worthless fools! I’m leaving!’ *Insert evil laugh here*.

Sleeping Beauty Blog – Week 7

This weeks blog comes from Michael Lacey, who’s playing our Jester, Presto. So here is it…Hey Presto!

Hey Gang!!

My names presto and I work her’… Wait. Let’s start that again. My name is Michael and I’ll be playing the part of ‘Presto’ the Court Jester!

So I have received the blogging baton from our lovely Deb Deb, and it’s my turn to report on what filibustering shenanigans have been going on this past week.

This week saw our troupe of amazing individuals setting the dance to ‘Counting Stars’ choreog’d by our fabulous Fay Kimal, which is sang by our devilishly talented ‘Evil Fairy’ Kate Russell backed up by her ‘Tweedle Dee’ and ‘Tweedle Dum’ henchmen ‘Boggers’ (Luke Clow) and ‘Sniffle’ (Sasha Newton)

Meanwhile over yonder in the other room, we were setting the scenes under the ever watchful eye of our Director Chris O’Shea. All was swimmingly well till Mr David Bowmen who is playing Samson (Prince Rupert’s Page) and Myself we asked to stage a little fight scuffle.. Well when I say words cannot describe the hilarity of Bowman’s “Limbering Up” for the scene through the medium of his knees. To cut a long story short he had our Fairies, Prince, Princess, Dame and I in fits of giggles for 10minutes straight. – That was just Monday night…

Wednesday night was an intimate rehearsal where myself and our Dame (Warren McWilliams – who also wrote our fantastic script) were called along with Chris O’Shea.
Chris put us both through our paces with playing around with dialogue and pushing me to face my uncomfortableness of eye contact by making me go through a monologue and counting the exact times I managed to look him in the eye.. Which was a pathetic 5 times!!

Anyway.. I’m so proud to be playing Presto in my first Panto, and the fact that I get to share it with the ridiculously talented individuals of SMP means so much!

You can catch us at the Intimate Theatre, Green Lanes N13 4DH from January 21st – 24th. This is going to be the #Bestpantoever

Sleeping Beauty Blog – Week 6

This weeks blog comes from our tip top dancer, Debbie Petrou, here’s her thoughts…

Hello all and welcome to this weeks instalment of the SMP blog for our fantabulous pantomime Sleeping Beauty.

Once again I put on my dancing shoes and step in line with our fabulous and talented chorus. Together with Jo B, Stacy, Rebecca, Carla, Stuart and our new addition who is as tall as The Shard! Andy, we hope to bring our moves and throw some shapes around the stage and entertain you.

On Monday we became invisible and threw our lovely Prince, Haydn Boxall around the room to bring you a magical number sung by our Evil ( voice of an angel ) Queen Kate Russell. With the help of Boggers and Sniffles the minions help Malevolent put our Prince under a spell, we are all certainly a little bit closer ( if that is possible ) after Monday’s rehearsal, I think the pictures will explain!! Choreographed by our very own Fay Kemal and musically directed my Mikey B we really hope that you enjoy the magic. Alongside our dancers we also teamed up with Director and the amazing cast whilst they ran through their scenes. I must say it’s all shaping up rather well!!

Wednesday’s rehearsal funcked us all up with a cracking number musically directed by the one and only Mr Benyon!! I thought we couldn’t get better, I was wrong!! Fronted by our super duper script writer Mr Warren McWilliams (Dame) we hope that our punchy, bright and tap your foot beats will get you all up dancing in the isles!!

Well that brings me to the end of my blog. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased online or over the phone. #BESTPANTOEVER

Sleeping Beauty Blog – Week 5

This week’s blog comes from the very sparkly Joanna McWilliams:

Coo-ee Cherubs,

A very sparkly welcome to Instalment #5 of our super exciting Sleeping Beauty Blog. I have so enjoyed reading these each week, especially as my fellow SMP buddies have done such a peachy job at keeping us all informed. Whilst a little nervous, I’m totally chuffed to get a chance to have go myself…almost as chuffed as I am to be playing the jumpy, joyous Fairy Fauna in our production of Sleeping Beauty, at the Intimate Theatre, this coming January, superbly written by Warren McWilliams, I might add. (Who says I’m biased?)

So here goes, folks…

Monday evenings rehearsal was dedicated to dance recaps, whoop whoop (we all get rather excited when there’s a chance to jump around) There were two big company numbers to recap, both carefully constructed by Choreographer Extraordinaire, Mrs Fay Kemal (omg, she totes just got married to fellow smper, Yiltan) and with Fays experienced hand not only are we flying through the numbers, we are already making time to recap them too. Much sweaty fun was had that evening and what a great start to the week it was.

On Wednesday evening we were back with the lovely Mr Mike Benyon (of MD joy), this time to learn one of our baddie numbers, booooo…I mean oooohh. With lead vocals from the delectable Kate Russell, who plays our wicked fairy, Malevolant, and backing from Sniffles & Boggers (Sasha & Luke of previous blog fame), the meany minions and our brilliant chorus, it was sounding deliciously dark. Kates incredible voice alone is reason enough to buy a ticket! We sped through that number so quickly that we had time to squeeze in a little more learning, and “hot damn” does our pre finale sound amazeballs…we’ve not even finished it yet. Well done Mikey B!

Meanwhile, during all that musical fun, upstairs some of our cast were left in the very capable hands of our awesome costume department, headed up by Ellie Goss & Fay, who I quote “always come in under budget” whilst still making us look fabulous. When you add in friend of SMP, Debbie Sandys, and her remarkable seamstress skills, you have a seriously powerhouse team up there. This week, all three good fairies, myself and dear friends, Lynzey Cooper & Marian Lynch who play Fairy Flora and Fairy Merriweather respectively, were measured for not one…but TWO dresses each, eeeeeeeeek. As if rehearsals weren’t fun enough, they go and throw custom made sparkly dresses and wings into the mix…no wonder I love SMP so much. Even the A10 resurfacing works on my journey home can’t dampen the glorious mood I find myself in after an evening with the extended fam.

Well I think that covers it, cherubs, what a productive week that was! Thank you so much for reading you lovely bunch. I shall now hand the baton over to another excited SMPer, ready to inform you of even more wondrous goings on at SMP HQ…but not before I share some piccies of last week’s Joy…
