Urinetown Blog – Week 11

Dear Reader

Welcome back to Urinetown!:) My name is Bernadett, a newbie at Saint Monica’s Players and I am presenting the weekly blog for last week. In the past 11 weeks I had the pleasure of working with very talented and enthusiastic people. SMP is a great community and a truly welcoming one. We have a cake angel in the group whose mission is to bake cakes for everyone’s birthday. She is incredible. These rehearsals are always joyful to the heart but thanks to our cake angel they are a real pleasure to our tummy as well.😊

I am playing Ally Upandatem (ensemble), an ex-nurse who is kind, positive and likes helping other people. Urinetown is a funny place though and you can never tell what effect it makes on people. Could Ally stay the same person she is now or will she change for the better or worse? I love this musical for being amazingly complex and giving all of its people a real journey of character development.

Being part of this show, I have learnt many useful things for everyday life too, like how to queue for the toilet, how to skip the line unnoticeably, how important is to fight for things I believe in and to accept the inevitable consequences of our acts. They are always there…

Last week we focused on staging three numbers: Privilege To Pee, Look At The Sky and We’re Not Sorry. They all represent very important stages of the show. Thanks to the brilliant trio, Warren (director), Jo (choreographer), Mike (musical director) the end product of these numbers will be amazing. Without their enthusiasm and talent, the show would not be the same. They work very hard and have us working hard too but do it in a way that makes the hard work FUN!:)

I’m very excited to be part of the show and it would be nice if you could be part of it too by supporting us and coming to see the show. You will not regret it I can promise you that.😊

Book your ticket here now. It would be lovely to see you in the audience!

Career Day at the WFFOT2016

This year SMP return to the Waltham Forest Festival of Theatre.

We are back with “Career Day”, another brilliant script by last years “Original Writing” award winner Mr Paul Levy. Congratulations to Paul who has won further awards since and even had his script published! #awesome

Direction & Production this year are by our very own David Bowman, and our charming Cast consists of a whole host of previous nominees and award winners…Wendy Cooper, Carla Segel, Rebecca Gediking, Marian Lynch and Luke Clow, and we must not forget last year’s “Stage Management” award winner Mr Ian Smith, who’ll be looking after the team again.

Our performance evening this year is Thursday 17th March, 7.30pm, at the usual location of Chingford Assembly Hall. As per previous years, there’ll be three separate entry performances on the night (we are on first, eeek) before the adjudicator gives feedback at the end and we all cheer rather loudly for SMP.

Tickets are £8.00 and can be bought on the door, great value for three competition level performances.

Below are some useful links, including dates, times, post codes etc,

Hope to see you there if you can make it, lovelies, and thank you so much for your time reading this.

Urinetown Blog – Week 3

This weeks blog comes from one of our new members, François. Who, as the name suggests has joined us all the way from France. Take it away François;

Urineville, c’est parti!

This is not a surprise but I am so utterly excited to have been given the opportunity to play two parts in the show.

First one, Dr Billeaux, is one of the Rich. He is a scientist in charge of the R&D Department at Urine Good Company. He is much of a coward and one the pets of our villain, Caldwell B. Cladwell.

The second is more of a mystery, Victor Khodahad. I haven’t been given the chance yet to rehearse as him so far, so I can’t tell you much. You will have to come to see. But what is certain is that a character with a name of Eastern European origin, being played by a French guy, is certain to bring the unexpected!

This week, we blocked the Act one Finale and as a rich person, I learned some very funny moves implying fingers. I can’t say more today, I am afraid it would sound nasty. Oui, je sais!

We then worked on the music for the scene and as with every musical piece we’ve worked on so far, it is so good to hear us singing it altogether. The harmonies gave me goose bumps many times! Trop bon… I am pretty sure it will be the same for you too when you come to support the show.

Well, for now, it is time de se dire au revoir. But I’ll see you soon, from the stage.

So, don’t forget about your tickets. A bientôt!

Sleeping Beauty Blog – Tech Run & Dress

We’ve reached the end of our rehearsals and Wednesday night will be our first performance in front of an audience.

Monday started off early as our lighting designer Matt arrived at 10 am to start plotting the show ready for the tech run later that evening.

Alex our stage manager wasn’t far behind and with help from cast and crew sorted through all the problems ready for the tech run that evening.

Props, front of house displays all got worked on so that they were ready to go and our box office lady, Kate, was busy sorting out those last minute ticket orders.

A huge THANK YOU has to go to all of our tech team and crew who manage to sort out our lighting sound and set all whilst still doing their day jobs. They don’t get much time to see the show and only a few rehearsals to get it right but they come through for us every time.

Our tech run on Monday night went nice and smoothly, no major problems along the way apart from a slight wardrobe malfunction on Haydns part which saw his trousers fall down during a dance number and Andy brake his finger as a result!

Tuesday was our dress run and we arrived at the theatre in the afternoon to start finishing off those bits that needed sorting on stage and with the lighting.

In the evening we were joined once again by our brilliant band and started our dress rehearsal. Despite a couple of missing people in some scenes and some dropped and restarted lines, the run went pretty well and we’re in good shape for our audience on Wednesday night. Thanks to Dave for taking some pictures or us too.

The show’s in good shape and we’ve had great feedback from those who’ve seen our rehearsals, so we really hope you come along to see us this week. There are still some tickets available so please book if you’re coming especially for matinees as there is limited availability for those shows.

Our Pantomime for 2017 will be…

SMP are very pleased to announce that after much consideration we’ve chosen our pantomime for January 2017. We’re very excited to share it with you.

For the first time in the groups history we will be performing ‘FROSTED – A Family Pantomime.’

The story tells the tale of two Princesses as one struggles to come to terms with the magical powers she has been given. Can they survive the snow storm? Will they ever find true love? Or will their kingdom be taken over by a wicked Prince? Watch the show to find out how strong the bond between sisters can be and that they’ll stop at nothing to look after each other.

Featuring all the traditional elements of pantomime this new show written by Warren McWilliams promises to warm the hearts of children of all ages and adults alike.

FROSTED

Sleeping Beauty Blog – Week 13

Hi, I’m Mike Benyon and I am musical director for SMP’s production of Sleeping Beauty.

Doing panto is not a new thing for this old stager. In fact, having joined SMP in 1992 this is my 24th successive year being involved with panto, either as musical director or as a member of the band.

So how does this match up with the previous 23? Well it’s right up there with them! What I love about panto is that there is so much scope for SMP to do things its own way. A book show uses the same script and book every time and there are even expected ways that each scene should be set; so much so that it’s almost like painting by numbers. With panto we are able to use our own script, once again beautifully written by the esteemed Mr Warren McWilliams, choose our own songs and then the director has the chance to mould his vision using the supreme talent at hand!

From a musical point of view this year’s panto is a departure from last year’s rock fest. While Aladdin contained a myriad of songs by Alice Cooper, Journey, 90s power ballads and other head banging classics, this year we have filled the show with more contemporary pieces. Still, I am very appreciative of youtube as most of this year’s tunes are not normally in this 55 year old’s gramophone collection.

Still, what makes it so special for me and why I continue to throw myself into SMP productions is that we have the people in our cast to turn songs of any genre into show stoppers. We are very lucky this year to have the lovely Eleanor Joy and the suave Haydn Boxall as Sleeping Beauty and the Prince. Their rendition of a classic from an oh-so slightly successful film of the last year or so had everyone crooning with admiration last week.

With less than two months to go until opening night last week’s rehearsals were a really good chance to see what shape the show is in. Monday night was supposed to be a dance re-cap but our amazing choreographer Fay Kemal was struck down with bubonic plague and missed her first rehearsal in 47 years. However, we circumnavigated this potential disaster by taking the opportunity to do a re-cap of all the songs. What was a real bonus for me is that while I was scrabbling around trying to find my notes about who is singing which harmony everybody in the cast has remembered them anyway. This makes my job so much easier and means that we can now concentrate on fine tuning other parts of the show knowing that the songs are almost ready for performance.

Wednesday night was great as it was the first run through of Act 1. Having not seen any of the acting so far it really brought home what a great script we have and gave a real insight into the hilarious characters that are developing. The Minions Boggers and Sniffle are played by Luke Clow and Sasha Newton. While anyone who has seen Luke on stage before knows what an accomplished performer he is, especially when making a complete fool of himself, this time he is joined by Sasha, who is playing her first main role for SMP. Her characterisation is a complete revelation and the two of them already have a real chemistry on stage.

As you will have heard in last week’s blog, we recently received the news that Warren McWilliams and his cherubic wife Jo are expecting their first baby. While this is fabulous news it did leave us with a missing fairy, something that no panto wants. However, last Wednesday’s rehearsal saw Jo’s part being filled by Wendy Cooper. Having played my wife in Our House it must be nice for Wendy not to

need to be aged half a century. Wendy has clearly slotted beautifully into the role alongside the sublimely talented Marian Lynch and Lynzey Cooper.

Wednesday’s rehearsal also made it abundantly clear that we have a great director in Chris O’Shea. Chris has played roles in a number of SMP shows and I am still amazed by his performance in Our House when he had more costume and character changes than most people have lines. He has a great aura of confidence and this certainly has been transmitted to the cast who at this early stage seem confident of what they are doing. And of course anyone who has followed SMP in the last 14 years since joining the group for SMP’s 2001 production of Jesus Christ Superstar knows how lucky we are to have Fay Kemal as choreographer.

I can’t finish this blog without mention of my band. While they are not yet involved with the show, I know that they can be relied on to turn my vision into reality. John Fossey, Chris Wall, Steve Rogers and Tim Hall must have performed in around 50 SMP shows between them. The band call, when it all comes together the week before the show, is always the most special rehearsal of them all. Bring it on!

SMP’s Halloween Bash

We hope you all had a spooktastic Halloween this weekend, folks. We at SMP had a ghoulishly glorious time at our Inaugural “SMP All Hollows Eve Party”. Thanks to a lot of hard work from our super Social Team, the scout hut was turned into a creepy cave full of lots of freaky fun…

There was a spookish smorgasbord for us all to feast on and competitions galore, including “Prettiest Pumpkin” and “Turn your fiend into a mummy” to get us all cheering along. With spooky songs blasting out too, there were break dancing baddies and wriggling witches on the dance floor, while others took part in “Splat the Rat” and ”Find the buried body”, not forgetting our squeamish “guess what’s in the box” game…eeew

There were lots of gruesome entries into our “best costume” competition too, and at midnight the results were announced… “Zombie on my back” & “Maleficent” came a very close 2nd and 3rd respectively, but our ultimate winner was the brilliant “Zombie Waitress”… and you certainly wouldn’t want her serving your milkshake J

We couldn’t have had more fun and hope this is the first of many Halloween events from our super talented SMP Social Team.

Here are some petrifying piccies from our eerie evening…

Sleeping Beauty Blog – Week 3

Our blog for week 3 comes from the artistic Sasha Newton who will be playing Sniffle in our panto. Here’s her thoughts!

Hello and welcome to another SMP blog detailing our antics during rehearsals that took place this past week, brought to you by, well me! We are in full swing now and start each rehearsal fresh faced (kind of) and raring to go!

This week took us to Malevolents’ lair (the evil witch who sends sleeping beauty to bed forever with a small prick … student life eh!) I am lucky enough to be playing the part of ‘Sniffle’ alongside ‘Boggers’ the simple minded duo, and right (and left) hand men to malevolent. I’m not entirely sure they are aware of their own existence, but they do as they are told and are none the wiser.

Monday we ‘wrecked the mic’ (spoiler alert) with Boggers and Sniffles’ raptastic duet! Energies were high as we succumbed to the enchanting musical stylings of Mr Mike Benyon! ‘There will be no harmonies today’ he says! This was beautiful news (to me anyway, I can have slight trouble hearing notes and singing the same one!)  this must mean there are no rules, and indeed we took advantage and let rip with this fun filled funky fabulousness! (4 F’s there).

Wednesday we got down with the director Mr Chris O’Shea, who had Boggers, played by Luke Clow and Sniffle worn out and ready for bed by the end. Running circles around Kate Russell’s Malevolent (who has now perfected her evil villain laugh by the way, it’s utterly haunting!) and adding layers to our characters scene by scene! We had an absolute blast in rehearsals as Chris directed scenes that had us in stitches, he took our emotions from one end of the spectrum to the other, and enlightened us with his vision! I cannot wait for what else is coming!

An absolute success of a week with much much more heading our way!!! As we grow and develop (and learn our lines!!!) who knows what’s to come!

We perform our production of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ on the 21st-24th January 2016, and whilst that may seem some time away, I know it will fly by (quicker than you can say Bakewell tart!) So I plan on enjoying every single moment whilst its here, every song, every dance and every clip round the ear my character receives. They are bruises of love. I truly hope you have as much fun watching as we do performing for you!

Now unfortunately I was unable to take photos of this week shenanigans – however please see my illustrations which I feel is perfect representation of the week! Enjoy, and Thank you!!

Our 2016 Summer Show Is…

Urintown

What is Urinetown – The Musical? Don’t be put off by the title. It’s twisted, it’s dark, and it’s hilarious!
Winner of three TONY Awards, Urinetown is a tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold.

A musical satire set in a fictional future where a terrible drought has crippled the city. Water is so scarce that the government enforces a ban on all private toilets in an effort to control water. The citizens must now use pay-per-use toilets owned and operated by a corrupt corporation. Those who try to dodge the fee risk being taken away to “Urinetown”, a mysterious place where many have been sent but no one ever returns.

The oppressed masses rise up under the leadership of Bobby Strong, a hero who decides he’s had enough, and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! Will they win? The only way to find out is to see Urinetown – The Musical.

Urinetown started a trend of ironic, self-aware, breaking the fourth wall shows that spawned the likes of The Producers and Book of Mormon. Combining social themes that are relevant to today’s climates with an outrageous perspective, wickedly modern wit and the magic of musical theatre the show produces gales of unbridled laughter.

Urinetown is unique, it’s everything a musical should be and somehow more. Its clever lyrics, brilliant script and captivating score were praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be. It is hilariously funny and touchingly honest. Providing a fresh perspective on ‘the musical’ it parodies everything from the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, municipal politics, climate change to musical theatre itself!
