Snow White Blog – Week 5

Hello everyone, this is Carl, I am very excited to be in this show as ensemble and King and my bad choice in second wives starts the cogs turning on this story, wonderfully adapted for SMP by the talented Warren McWilliams. On Monday, we were working hard (not quite 9 to 5) on one of the numbers full of taptastic joy and also fish slapping!! The Dwarfs were also off to work on their scenes. For Wednesday’s rehearsal, I wasn’t needed as the dwarfs were doing more acting.

The production team are certainly working us all very hard to get the best out of all the cast, so I’m sure you can imagine being in SMP is great for your fitness levels. So, if you want a fun way of dropping a few pounds then joining an amateur theatre company is a great way to do it!

It may have passed you by, but on the 10th October it was World Mental Health Awareness Day. According to Mental Health foundation it is estimated that 1 in 6 people in the past week experienced a common mental health problem. I know from my personal experience with anxiety how much being in a theatre company has helped me. Being part of a group that is more like a family has had such a positive impact on my mental wellness.

Obviously there are many types social groups out there, from walking clubs, book clubs and also amateur dramatics. Mind.org.uk suggests that making new connections through social groups may be one of the easiest ways to reduce some of the symptoms of mental illness.

With over 900,000 people in London suffering from a mental disorder, we need more investment in community and social groups, not less. So please support your local theatre groups. It seems sad that we may be losing another local theatre, with the planned demolition of the Intimate Theatre. Now, I know that SMP will continue on strong if we do lose the Intimate. However, it will be cause difficulties and will be a sad loss for the community and the community groups that use the theatre. So please support us in our fight to save the Intimate and come and see us in what may be our last panto there.

So go out there be physically and mentally healthy!

What’s on at The Intimate this year?

The Intimate Theatre – Our Proposals.

We were told that as a group of users of the Intimate Theatre we’d be given the opportunity to present our ideas to the Buildings Audit Committee at St Monica’s. We were told in advance our ideas would not be taken into consideration as final decisions had already been made but we felt it was still worth presenting our ideas.

Sadly this meeting could not be arranged but we felt the ideas were still valid and wanted to share them online in the hope that they will be viewed by the Buildings Audit Committee at some point.

We do not have access to all the surveyors reports for the buildings and our drawings are not to scale. Neither do we have access to St Monica’s parish financial information but based on what we have seen from the two parish meetings we feel this work would be of similar scale, offers good potential for financial returns and offers value for money.

Please note that these are concept ideas similar to those given in the meeting on the 1st of October. As such we are not suggesting each option be taken as a whole and that perhaps the best solution would be to include elements from each. Also we were faced with the problem of not knowing how many meeting rooms or offices were required since it has never been made clear how many of each room were needed it has just been listed as ‘more’.

You can find the presentation below.

What’s on at the Intimate Theatre this Christmas – 2018-2019

There’s plenty to do at the Intimate Theatre this year with 3 fantastic pantomimes on offer for you. For booking details please see the links below.

Booking tickets

The London Pantomimers present – ‘The Wizard of Oz’

We’re off to see the Wizard for this year’s family show from the London Pantomimers in their 73rd production. Watch our talented actors bring their own style and enthusiasm to the show. Be prepared (like all good scouts) to cheer, boo, laugh and dance; audience participation is definitely encouraged. There is a choice of 11 performances, from 6th to 15th December at The Initmate Theatre, Palmers Green, N13

The curtain first went up on the Haringey and Southgate Districts Scout Pantomime in December 1944, when, in the dark days towards the end of the Second World War, a group of enthusiastic local Scout leaders got together and decided to liven things up and raise funds at the same time. Since then, the annual Scout Pantomime has played to audiences of many thousands who are guaranteed a genuine traditional family pantomime.  Our entirely voluntary team – from box office, directors, back stage crew and talented cast hope you enjoy the show and thank you for your support.

All profits from this special pantomime go to helping young people in North London through The Scout Association.

Acorn Theatre Company present ‘Robin Hood’

Will Robin and his Merry Men (cheer!) conquer over the Sheriff of Nottingham (boo!)? Will Maid Marion find true love (ahh!)? Will Friar Tuck improve his cooking skills (yuk!)? Find out the answers and join in the fun and adventure at the Intimate Theatre this January!

Acorn Theatre Company return to the Intimate Theatre for another fun-filled family pantomime. Following our successful productions of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and ‘Our House’ in 2018 we are looking forward to the start of 2019 with our performance of the classic tale of ‘Robin Hood’.

Proceeds from Acorn productions are donated to local charities and since 1989 we have donated over £75,000 to good causes. With your support, we hope to be able to make a significant donation to this year’s nominated charity.

SMP Present – ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs – A Family Pantomime’

After the success of their recent pantomimes, Frosted and The Little Mermaid, SMP return to the Intimate Theatre with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs – A Family Pantomime.

When her Magic Mirror tells Snow White’s Stepmother, that she is no longer fairest in the land, the vain, wicked Queen vows to put an end to her Stepdaughter. Aided by her friends, Snow White escapes and hides with the Dwarf family deep in the forest. But she is soon found and struck down by a poisoned apple. Will Snow White survive? Can true love save her? Will the Queen be fairest in the land once again? The only way to find out is to watch the show.

Featuring all the traditional elements of pantomime this new show written by Warren McWilliams promises to warm the hearts of children of all ages and adults alike. Featuring a range of hit songs, spectacular dancing and great gags, Snow White is a fantastic family pantomime that will not disappoint.

Snow White Blog – Week 4

Hello lovely people, and welcome to this week’s instalment of the Snow White blog! I’m Ellie and I am lucky enough to be playing Snow White in our panto this year. Being part of SMP panto is always such a treat but I have to admit that wearing a princess dress and a tiara makes it even more enjoyable.

Monday’s rehearsal of this week was very exciting indeed as we got to work on setting our spectacular Act One finale. We sang through the arrangement last week with our marvellous MD’s Kate Sanders and Mike Benyon, so it was great to set it as well.

It’s definitely the song that I’ve been most looking forward to working on since it was played at Read Through. I’m afraid that I can’t tell you what song it is but I will say that it is the one you’ve been waiting for….

It’s a big song and dance number involving the entire cast (if you know what show that’s from, 500 points to you, well done) so everyone was called, as were both of our choreographers! That’s right: it’s such a big number that our two wonderful choreographers, Wendy Cooper and Hayley McAra, have had to split it between them.

Wendy took myself, the seven dwarfs, the Prince and his valet, aka the goodies, to learn our sections whilst Hayley was in charge of our incredible featured dancers, ensemble, minions and other baddies headed up by our very scary Evil Queen Joanna McWilliams (don’t believe it when she calls you a cherub peach, she’s actually very mean and keeps trying to force feed me apples…).

Our team captain, head honcho, top man director Chris O’Shea was also busy, running scenes with those of us who had a spare moment between dancing. Scene rehearsals have been so much fun this year as once again we have such a funny original script to work with, written by the incomparable Warren McWilliams, who definitely hasn’t paid me to say this.

Whilst we’re only a few weeks into our rehearsals I’m confident to say that this show is already shaping up to be a really fun, family friendly, magical panto. The whole directorial team are doing a brilliant job and have selected a great soundtrack for the show, with songs to please everyone in the family. The costumes I’ve seen so far are as colourful and beautiful as ever, and there are classic panto gags galore. It really isn’t one to miss, particularly as this could be our last at the beautiful Intimate Theatre.

Don’t miss out, buy your tickets today!

Messages of Support for The Intimate Theatre

We’ve received messages of support from local politicians and those in the entertainment industry. As we receive more we will add them below.

The great theatres of England are slowly being eradicated piecemeal. The first time I witnessed it was when the magnificent Finsbury Park Empire, designed by that legendary architect Frank Matcham was destroyed to make way for a supermarket. Finsbury Park is now a dead zone. Each time a theatre is pulled down, it is like a part of that particular borough is amputated. They tried to destroy the Hackney Empire, also a magnificent theatre, but the theatrical community resisted so fiercely that the order to destroy it was redacted. Now that theatre is functioning and breathes fresh new life into Hackney.

To lose The Intimate, Palmers Green where I have also played as a young man, would be more than just a shame. In the past twenty or more years, we have lost hundreds of libraries, score upon score of theatres, endless lido swimming pools and the reason always given is to build yet more soul-destroying rabbit hutches.

Steven Berkoff – Actor, author, playwright and theatre director

It would be so sad to see The Intimate theatre disappear as many artistes learned their trade there, perfecting their craft, not only in acting but also how ‘to walk a stage’… as they say. So many well-known stars have worked this lovely little theatre, which has a great history of presenting all kinds of entertainment over the years and, as a performer, if you lived in London it gave you the opportunity of working a theatre, and being able to get home at night after the show.

I had my early theatrical training there, working for a producer named Ronnie Kerr, and although it was hard work having to learn your lines in the afternoon then performing at night, The Intimate was exactly that….Intimate. It gave you a warm and cosy feeling. A wonderful place to be.

Although people like to watch television these days, this little theatre in Palmers Green was the place to go and meet friends, see a great production and, as they also say, there’s nothing like a live show. Why take that away from us?

Nicholas Parsons. TV Presenter and Actor

“It would be a catastrophe to turn The Intimate Theatre into anything other than an entertainment venue. As a comedian myself  in my early days I played several pantomimes there as well as numerous ‘one-nighters’, and it was also a great venue to hold charity concerts for the Comedian’s Golfing Society with many star names appearing on-stage in our shows.

During my slow changeover from a comedy performer to a Theatrical Producer, I also used the coin-box telephone in the dressing room during my breaks in panto scenes so I could book many a star-studded tour for artistes such as Matt Monro, Larry Grayson, Danny La Rue, Max Bygraves and Norman Wisdom. I could hear my fellow artistes calling me saying such things as …”Johnny, get off the ‘phone! I don’t care who you’re booking….you’re on in two minutes in the Beanstalk scene!”….They were great days and The Intimate made me as successful as I am today. It will always be a part of my life, a part of show-business history, and something that should be listed as a theatre forever more.”

Johnny Mans.   Producer – Johnny Mans Productions.

“I am writing to express my support for the campaign to save the Intimate Theatre, Palmers Green, from possible demolition. From the correspondence I have received, and the posts that I have seen on social media, I know that the future of the Intimate Theatre means a great deal to the Saint Monica’s Players (SMP) theatre group, as well as many other local groups and members of the Palmers Green community.

The Intimate Theatre’s rich history, dating back over 80 years, makes the site not only a valued part of Enfield’s cultural heritage but also the history of British theatre. I support your aim for the theatre to be refurbished to suit the needs of the parish of St Monica’s Church, Palmers Green, and to be run as an affordable community theatre space – thereby preventing the loss of one of London’s last remaining local theatres.”

Rt. Hon Joan Ryan MP – Labour Member of Parliament for Enfield North

‘I first stepped foot in a theatre like the Intimate when I was eight or nine. The experience set me on the path of being a film and television director with an Oscar nomination. Destroying an important resource like this is a tragedy for the children and young people in our community who won’t be given the chance to find out if the creative arts is for them’

Councillor Ian Barnes – Winchmore Hill ward (Labour) – TV and Film Director

“The Intimate Theatre was where I, and so many generations before me, first experienced theatre – on stage, back stage and as an audience member. In my teenage years it was a place to perform, socialise with people my own age in my community and to have a real sense of belonging to that community. Without theatre’s in our community we are depriving future generations the opportunities to create, learn, entertain and be entertained. 10 years of selfish austerity has squeezed the already pinched middle and working class and robbed a whole generation of personality building outlets. These theatres focus on the local communities and should be more affordable and accessible than larger, city centre theatres. The Intimate Theatre is in desperate need of governmental or Arts Council investment and community support. At the very least, it should be replaced with a similar space for generations of future West End performers to have an opportunity to dream of what they could become and for thousands of young people to have a space to express themselves, be safe and enrich their lives in areas of personal development. Losing a community space in favour of more unaffordable housing is a damning indictment of how broken and implosive our society has become. We don’t need less theatres like The Intimate: we need MORE.”

David O’Mahony – Actor

Snow White Blog – Week 3

Hello everyone, I’m Michael and I’ll be playing the role of ‘Muddles’ in SMPs “Snow White”

Rehearsals are now in full swing and Monday night saw some of the principles setting the opening scene for the show, whilst the rest of the cast were setting the routine for a very special song.

Once again we are extremely lucky to have such an enormous amount of talent within our production team alone, and that’s without even mentioning the cast! – Under the watchful eye of Wendy Cooper who makes her choreographing debut with this show. Chris O’Shea returning as the ‘Man in charge’ unleashing his directorial skills upon us all again.

Wednesday night had us singing our little hearts out to what can only be described as a “Show stopper” of a song!!

We are very fortune to be under the supervision of the legend that is Mikey B who is returning for his 20983756th consecutive panto with SMP (That figure may not be factual, but its definitely more years than I can count of my fingers and toes together!) – With an added little bonus of being joined by Kate Sanders, whom you recognise as Octavia from last years.. dare I say it.. INCREDIBLE panto ‘The Little Mermaid’ (That show must have had an amazing Director!!)

Its safe to say that everyone involved with this years panto is having a fantastic time during rehearsals, and its only the beginning! – “What’s that?.. You don’t know where to get your tickets from?!!”

Tickets are available right here!!

Snow White Blog – Week 2

Hi all, my names Tina and this year I’m playing the roll of Greedy Dwarf. I am loving it because it means I can eat onstage….bring on the stage snacks!!

This week in the land of panto has been brilliant as always…

I have totally immersed myself in my role of Greedy Dwarf, including demolishing lots of bourbon biscuits. Ive decided to go totally method with this part! 😀

However for this week i’ve had to bury my inner dwarf deep as all us dwarves are in disguise for the opening number! Don’t say anything, sshh Its our little secret!!

Monday evening started with Mr Mikey B and Lady Kate Sanders teaching the opening number followed by Madam Wendy Lady putting us through our paces with the choreography…. Its been a good few months since my dancing shoes have been on but once the music kicked we all started to move our feet!

Now Wednesday, Lady Kate and Mr Mikey B were in charge again to go through the astounding harmonies that create possibly the most spine tingling sounds of….a song….i’m not giving anything away, you’ll just have to come along and hear for yourself!!

Don’t miss out as this show is already sounding and looking amazing in just 2 weeks- imagine what it will be like come January!!

All the details for tickets are below

See you all at the show- feel free to bring me some snacks! 😉

Greedy

Intimate Theatre Redevelopment & SMP’s Future.

The following post is to help us communicate to our members and audience what is happening regarding the groups future.  A petition has been set up to save the Intimate Theatre from demolition which can be found here: https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/save-the-intimate-theatre-palmers-green
WE WILL UPDATE THIS ARTICLE WITH THE LATEST INFORMATION AS IT ARISES.
– As you may have read on various platforms the future of the Intimate Theatre and Cannon House are currently unclear as there are plans to sell Cannon House and demolish and redevelop the Intimate Theatre. Confirmed on the 2nd September.
– This will not effect the SMP Production of Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs to be performed in January 2019
– We met with Father Mehall and two of the Buildings Audit committee from the Parish on the 12th September and were joined by representatives of Acorn Theatre Company and The London Pantomimers who also use the Intimate.
– Sadly at this meeting we were told that after a five year review the plans were final, all possibilities had been looked into and any suggestions we had would not be considered.
– SMP is opposed to this redevelopment as we stand to lose both a theatre that we perform in, rehearsal space and also our storage facilities for set and costumes.
– We believe that with refurbishment and proper management of The Intimate it could be a successful theatre and a space for the parish to use.
 St Monica’s Church Plans
– There have been rumours for some time about the potential redevelopment of the Intimate Theatre site.
– At a meeting held on the 18th September for parishioners, and some of the users of the Intimate Theatre, a presentation was given regarding the current state of buildings and three options that the church had considered.
1. Refurbishment of current buildings
2. Sale of Cannon House, demolition of The Intimate Theatre and new build of parish centre.
3. Sale of Cannon House, demolition of The Intimate Theatre and new build of parish centre. Addition of 6 flats.
– The Buildings Audit Committee of the church decided that for the project to be financially viable, option three was the best option as flats were needed to help finance the project.
– During the meeting questions were taken and we were told the architect would take everyone’s points into consideration.
– The church has also reached out on social media placing the following statement on the Love Your Doorstep group.
– A letter was sent to all those who attended the meeting on the 18th
– It’s unclear from both if the flats are no longer being considered as part of the build as they are not mentioned in either statement. But this seems unlikely as we were told they were vital to help finance the project. Update – at the meeting on the 1st of October a question was asked if the construction of flats had been mistakenly left off these statements and it was confirmed by Father Mehall it must have been a mistake. The delay in publication of the Parish Newsletter was also raised as there had been a regular update in the past. This would be looked into.
– There will be a further meeting the 1 October at the Intimate Theatre 7.30pm where the church will show its plans for the new development. We will then have a better understanding of what they intend to replace the theatre.
– After an article appeared in The Stage https://www.thestage.co.uk/news/2018/steven-berkoff-backs-calls-save-north-londons-intimate-theatre-closure/ voicing actors including Steven Berkoff’s support for the venue. We were contacted by the Buildings Audit Committee and invited to present some ideas to them in private although these will not be taken into consideration. *Sadly this meeting did not materialise however you can see the presentation we had planned to give with our proposals here: http://smp.snowhosting.co.uk/the-intimate-theatre-our-proposals/
– We have accepted their offer and the date for the meeting is TBC.
– As it stands our production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in Jan 2019 could be the final show staged at the Intimate Theatre.
– On the 1st of October a second meeting was held by Colin Smart of Kyle Smart Associates, the architect appointed by St Monica’s, to show the original concept ideas to the parish. A short introduction was given by Father Mehall and by Paolo Camoletto (Diocesan Chief Operating Officer).
– The new parish centre contained a café bar/foyer, a large hall which could be split with a dividing acoustic screen, a new kitchen, a breakout area upstairs and some meeting rooms and offices on a second level above the main entrance. The plans also contained a 3 storey block of flats at the rear of the new development which would run along the current line of housing on Stonard Road.
– The initial ideas were given a mixed reception, some felt the building lacked its own identity or link to the church. Some felt the centre should be physically joined to the church so parishioners could move directly from the church into the new parish centre
– Questions were raised including some on the financial aspects of the project but as this was a concept meeting and those areas would be addressed later. A question was asked about parking for the flats, it was confirmed the flats will have no additional parking.
– On the 3rd of October the latest parish newsletters were published online. The 23rd September edition carried a statement that was similar to those already published online but now included mention of the construction flats.
– On the 25th Of October we were informed that as planning had not yet been submitted and this pocess would take some time we would be able to book Cannon House until Easter 2019. We asked if that extended to the Theatre as we are keen to put on one more production there if possible to give the venue a fitting send off. We have been told that there will be no bookings in the Theatre after our Pantomie in January 2019. However as we are keen to make sure the Theatre still gets used, and does not sit empty, we have asked the BAC to reconsider and if we could still rehearse on a Monday and potentially put on a show in Easter.
– On the 11th December 2018 the Theatre was listed as an Assest of Community Value. The Intimate Theatre Facebook page announce the decision for it to be granted.

We’re pleased to announce that The Intimate Theatre is now listed as an Asset of Community Value by Enfield Council.

This follows a succesful application supported by six local amateur dramatic groups on behalf of the wider community that use the Intimate for various uses. The application was granted despite a challenge from St Monica’s Parish.

Thank you to all that have signed the petition, it did not go unnoticed by the panel.

The panel found that:

“This asset is an integral part of the wider parish & community. Historically it is also renowned Borough wide. It provides a platform for various community groups to convene and engage whether it be through the medium of arts and culture. The nominator has clearly demonstrated a programme of upcoming events which signals inclusivity and regular use.”

“The nominator highlighted the current users desire to see continuity of this facility, indeed they also highlighted the fact that former clubs/societies made a commitment to return if said asset had major investment. It is also apparent via a recent online petition that there is demonstrable support for this nomination”

The panel also felt that “the asset be made fit for purpose practically and within reasonable resource requirements and within timescales”

–  On Sunday 20th January 2019 SMP performed for the last time on the Intimate stage, their sunday matinee performance was the last show as the doors were to be closed and no more bookings were taken by the church for the Theatre. We gave the venue a good send off with a sell out performance and were joined by more people at home as our send off was broadcast live on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SMPTheatre/videos/1237897986359768/

On Tuesday 22nd January 2019 The Theatres Trust announced that The Intimate Theatre would be included on their Theatres at Risk register and that they would be campaigning to reopen the Theatre. They wish to try and set up dialogue with the church to work towards a possible solution.http://www.theatrestrust.org.uk/how-we-help/theatres-at-risk

On The 1st February St Monica’s Church put out a press release with an update on their plans. We felt some of the information included warranted a response and so on the 4th of February we issued our own press release. You can read both below.

 SMP’s views
– As a group we are opposed to the sale of Cannon House and demolition of the Intimate Theatre.
– We stand to lose both our rehearsal venues, the venue to perform our annual pantomime and our storage space for set and costumes.
– We believe that by refurbishing and developing the current buildings and with good management the needs of the parish groups could be met and prioritised, avoiding demolition of such a valuable asset to the community.
– There are people willing to volunteer to help with management of the building and with the refurbishment process. But it would take the will of the church to allow that to happen.
– A petition has been set up to save the Intimate Theatre from demolition which can be found here: https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/save-the-intimate-theatre-palmers-green
– A facebook group has also been set up for people to share their memories of their time there: https://www.facebook.com/groups/332720484202395/
– With some good lighting and a bit of creativity we know how nice the venue can look these pictures are from a wedding reception in the Theatre in 2013.
  • Our proposals of how the space could be developed to meet the needs of all parties can be found here: http://smp.snowhosting.co.uk/the-intimate-theatre-our-proposals/
  • Should planning be granted we would like to produce on last show at the Intimate to give it a fitting send off. We have asked about a booking in Easter 2019 but have been told that there will be no bookings allowed after our panto in Jan 2018.
What this means for Saint Monica’s Players.
– Despite our name we are designated as a non-parish group. As a non-parish group we were not included in the 5 year consultation nor were our needs given any priority.
– It’s unclear at which point we ceased to be a parish group. The group was set up 60 years ago by parishioners and whilst it is true few of our members attend services on a Sunday, we have always acted as a group in a way that would not be to the detriment of the church
– In addition, our members have helped by serving on committees and assisting at fundraisers like the Cannon House garden parties where we have provided equipment, organisation and entertainment to help raise money for the parish. Members have also played Father Christmas for the parish children in the past.
– We believe that we were included on the St Monica’s Parish website under parish activities S-Z. Currently our contact details are not listed but a picture from our show ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ performed at Cannon House in 2006 appears.

What do we plan going forward?

– We are in full swing with rehearsals for our next show Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 17th – 20th January 2019
– This could be the last show staged at the Intimate Theatre
– We are actively in the process of looking for new rehearsal venues, and either somewhere to store our costumes or a site that we could place a portacabin/shed. If anyone has any suggestions please get in touch.
– Our summer musical has not been confirmed. We were looking into the possibility of a musical as normal as well as a full length Shakespeare play staged outdoors in promenade at a location in Enfield.
– Due to the uncertainty we may not be in a position to put together a musical for summer 2019.
– However we will be performing the full length Shakespeare play and are committed to performing a pantomime in 2020.

– As of 3/02/19 – We will be performing a promenade performance of Much Ado About Nothing in Bury Lodge Park in June and we will be part of Waltham Forest’s London Borough of Culture programme as we will perform Cinderella at the Chingford Assembly Hall  in December 2019.

Why is the Intimate Theatre important?

– The Intimate was built by the church in 1931 for parish use and became a professional theatre in 1935, when it was home to Sir John Clements’ repertory theatre company.
– It was the first London theatre to reopen during WW2 and the theatre made history when George and Margaret, a comedy by Gerald Savory, became the first play to be televised on the BBC in 1946.
– Since then many stars, including Richard Attenborough, Roger Moore and David Bowie, have graced its stage.
– It is now one of the last remaining local theatres left in London and its sprung floor and plaster proscenium arch are rare examples of their kind. The theatre also contains many original features such as its fire curtain which are in fine working order.

– The building also houses a small hall which is used by local groups and whilst the theatre has mainly been used as a function room for parish events since 1988, local theatre groups have continued to use it to stage performances and hold rehearsals.
– The theatre has continued to produce talent to this day and many have gone on to be professional actors, directors and musicians.
– The building is listed on the Enfield Heritage list.

Snow White Blog – Week 1

Mwah ha ha ha ha ha….oh sorry, didn’t see you there, I was just practicing my evil cackle…

Welcome to week two of our infamous panto blog, I’m Jo Mac and I have the absolute pleasure of playing your wicked queen in SMPs spectacular pantomime “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” I’m totally thrilled to be playing such an iconic and meaty role (or roll, as Greedy Dwarf would say) but a wee bit petrified at the same time as it’s a slight (to say the least) departure from previous roles but boy am I looking forward to it…oh yes I am!

Week one of rehearsals were an absolute blast, folks, let me tell you all about them…

Monday was our very first meet as a whole cast and the atmosphere was buzzing! With a chance to FINALLY group hug after our summer break and Director Chris’ threat that we should “be prepared to get wet” we were like a bunch of over excited kids in the school playground.

The production team more than lived up to their promise of a fun filled evening of team building. After being split into teams we competed in several challenges to see which team came out on top. Tasks included “apple bobbing” (don’t worry I didn’t poison them) “pass the poison apple” (oops, I did poison those) “avoid the queens spell and find the safe place” (there seems to be a theme here, I’ll try not to take offence)

Of course my “wicked” team won, not so fair and square, mwah ha ha ha ha (ooh this laugh is coming along rather nicely) but as always, it really wasn’t about the winning and much more about working together to achieve something great and that, it seems, will be VERY easy when lead by this magnificent, enthusiastic and extremely organised production team.

Wednesday was equally seamless and led by our delicious Director Chris, who got straight to work on some scenes with our dashing Dwarfs, super Snow White and most importantly; Moi! (Oh dear, too much?) while our brilliant costume team; Fay, Ellie & Debbie S met to discuss all things glittery and get some of us measured up too.

It was a joyful and productive first week and we head into our second with HUGE smiles on our faces. We’d love to put those smiles on yours too so don’t miss out folks, all the deets of our show and how you can come and enjoy the fun are below.

Thank you for listening, you lovely lot!

Yours,

Queenie Xxxxx

Snow White Blog – Read Through and Auditions

Hell, I’m Chris and I am kicking off the SMP’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs blog.

After a great turn out for our read through we had a very successful bunch of auditions. I couldn’t quite believe the talent I witnessed and could not be more excited to direct a show with such a fabulous group of performers. Not only have I got a brilliant cast, I also have to mention the amazing production team: Wendy our choreographer, Hayley our assistant choreographer and finally Kate and Mike our joint musical directors.

This will be my second panto that I have directed with SMP. I am extremely excited to be back on the other side of the curtain again (even though I love being on stage) but I am determined, with this production team and cast to make this an absolutely tremendous show. It has been 21 years since I first stepped onto the stage at the Intimate Theatre, and coincidentally, 20 years since I first performed with our fabulous choreographer, Wendy (Babes in the Wood, 1998).

Unfortunately, it is very likely that Snow White will be the last show ever performed on this stage. If this is so, then our duty is the make sure that we put on the #GreatestPantoEver. With the brilliant cast, marvellous production team, creative technical team and magnificent writer (Warren McWilliams) then this task will be easier than biting an apple.

Rehearsals commence today! The cast have not been informed of what exactly they will up to tonight – but we have given them a clue – be prepared to get wet.

It’s not too early to book tickets. If you want the best seats, get them now. This may be your last chance to experience the magic at The Intimate Theatre. Let the memories live. #IntimateMemories

The show runs at The Intimate Theatre, 521 Green Lanes, Palmers Green, London, N13 4DH from Thurs 17th to Sat 19th January 2018 at 7.30 p.m. & Matinee on Sat 2oth & Sunday 20th January 2018 at 2.30 p.m. In addition, SMP will introduce an 11am Matinee on Saturday 20th with a show specifically tailored for our younger audience.

Snow White 2019 Cast Announced.

After a fabulous set of auditions, much discussion and procrastination from the creative team we are proud to say our cast for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is:

As you may have heard this may be the last show at the Intimate Theatre in it’s current form before it makes way for a new parish centre on the site so we’re going to make sure this is one hell of a show.

The show is written by Warren McWilliams, directed by Chris O’Shea, musically directed by Kate Sanders and Mike Benyon and choreographed by Wendy Cooper and Hayley McAra.

The Spamalot Blog – The PSB’s

Well, there we are. What went on in Camelot didn’t stay there, we’re all more exhausted than a dead parrot and my aching knees have resulted in me doing a silly walk. It seems the Monty Python effect really has set in.

Everyone in the am dram world knows that after every show come the PSB’s, the post show blues and after all the fun in Camelot we’ve got a bad dose.

Spamalot has been such fun for us all and the reaction from our audience has been wonderful. It’s been great looking out at the end of the show and seeing an audience thoroughly enjoying themselves along with you. As we try and recover from the toils of show week and not forgetting the hangovers from the after show party we’re missing being part of the crazy world of Spamalot, not to mention seeing the Spam-Fam every day.

Looking back at last week it’s pleasing to see that the group has continued to grow again. We saw new faces become part of the SMP family both on and offstage, old faces continued while others returned. We had people take on new roles making sure our productions still run smoothly. Mentions go out to Anna Trofimova for taking on her job with such aplomb and to Adam Humpreys who not only debuted as ‘Gondolier’ but took on the mantle of SM and built a crew so special words can’t describe them (I’ll spare you the crew initiation pictures). Huge thanks too to our production team Paula, Stuart and Fay for putting together such a great show.

This year we celebrate 60 years of friendship, good times and entertaining the community and if we carry on as we are then it seems the group will continue forever.

So much has been said about our fabulous set made by Matt McManus and it was all true. Sadly it looked like we were possibly going to have to tear down Camelot but thankfully it lives on and will be at the Wyllots theatre next year for Potters Bar Theatre Company’s production of Spamalot. We wish you all the best for your show and hope you have half as much fun as we’ve had.  https://www.facebook.com/PottersBarTheatreCompany/

Now SMP moves on to something completely different…panto! Our next show will be Snow White and the seven dwarfs. If you’d like to be a part of the show you can find all the details below.

Next year will see a total change for us as we’ll put on two shows instead of one. A Musical at the Dugdale and we will bring Shakespeare to the streets of Enfield in a promenade performance. These changes give us a chance to put on shows in ways we’ve not done before and we’re very excited. We’ll keep you updated with more details on the website as we have it.

As for Spamalot, a wise doctor once said; Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened. Well I suppose we should be, after all, that’s looking on the bright side of life… (whistles to himself)

Snow White – Read Through and Auditions

The Spamalot Blog – Show Week

Wow!!! SPAMALOT show week. What an amazing week it has been. I’m Stuart, the Musical Director, and it gives me huge amounts of pleasure to be able to write this blog. From opening night through to closing night, this has been an awesome week in history that will stay with SMP for a long time.

Opening night on Wednesday set the tone with SMP’s first standing ovation and the rest of the week received audience responses such as “better than the West End” and “funnier than Broadway”. Nobody expected to hear that kind of feedback and it was gratefully received by the cast, technical team, stage crew and production team.

It was a wonderful experience to have musically directed the cast through their shows this week and having a view of the stage meant that I got to watch them all shine in this spectacular production. The hard work and energy that they gave through the 4 shows really made this a show to remember and had our audiences laughing, singing and getting up on stage with them. They were superb and were a great example of local talented people giving heart and sole to something they love, amateur dramatics. It almost seems wrong to call it that. The standard was extremely high and the contributions given from the production and technical teams and stage crew were of a professional level.

The week didn’t go without its glitches, some of which were mine, and saw panic and franticness amongst everybody at one point or another. From sticky backing tracks, to delayed technicians due to train trouble, to burnt costumes, falls and scrapes, missing props, onstage corpsing, wig malfunctions….we had it all. However, this great group of people showed immense amounts of support and we were always only ever one hug away from everything being better again.

This week showcased some new talent for SMP and we hope that you all enjoyed seeing the new faces, and we hope that they will stay with SMP for future shows. We were lucky enough to see some standout performances from the newbies and we are encouraged that more and more local talent want to get involved and we were delighted to have had them on board.

Through this process we have come to refer to each other as the Spam-Fam. A family of dedicated, hardworking committed people that want the best for each other, who like to support each other and nurture talent. This family have produced an almighty show, with great passion, unfaltering talent and above all, huge heart. I am very happy and proud, and now signing off as their Musical Director. It has been epic!!!!

The Spamalot Blog – Opening Night

Edmonton 2018 AD. A cast united and an audience overjoyed!

I’m Rebecca Gediking and I am delighted to be playing the part of ‘Historian’ in SMP’s marvellous production of ‘Spamalot’. I’m thrilled that I have been asked to write about our opening night and what a night it was! This will be a performance that will go down in history for all of us at SMP.

In the previous blog entries, we have read about the production process, the auditions, rehearsals, props, the set building, lighting, sound and the costumes. There is so much work that goes on behind the scenes to bring a production to life. Our production team have put their heart and soul into creating ‘Spamalot’. They are visionaries, creatives, risk takers and enormous fun to work with. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with them and with my fellow cast members. SMP has often been described as a friendly, professional, fun and supportive theatre group and this is completely true. In this fast paced comical production, when we aren’t performing, we are in the wings setting props, helping with very quick costume changes and laughing with each other.

The opening night of a show is always exciting as it is the night where everything comes together and we get to share our production with our first audience. Our opening night for ‘Spamalot’ was not only exciting, it felt magical. The audience was one of the best we have ever had and the atmosphere was electric from start to finish! Audience members cheered, laughed and sang with us throughout the show and many of them rushed to the box office to buy tickets to see us again! Audience members said that our production was better than the West End and Broadway and our social media pages are awash with glowing, Spamtastic reviews!

We were honoured to have been joined by the Mayor of Enfield tonight. The Mayor came and met with us backstage and declared that all of Enfield should come and see ‘Spamalot!’ There is something for everyone in this production, not only will it ‘have you rolling in the aisles’ – as the Mayor wrote in her review… for the Monty Python lovers, you can practise your silly walks, quote and sing along and for those who don’t know Monty Python you will be able to experience and enjoy a live theatre production, full of dancing, songs and comedy.

Everyone who performed and watched ‘Spamalot’ tonight left on cloud nine and I do hope that after reading this, you will join us on the ‘Bright side of life’ and be a part of the magic this week.
