Pirate Blog – Week 9

Hello and welcome to my second installment of the Pirate blog.

We’re roughly half way through the rehearsal schedule and I have to say I’m really pleased with how everything is going. Thanks to the hard work of the cast and the team we’re still on schedule and although we’ve been moving at a rapid pace, the cast are doing their homework and whats been set has been retained and is looking great. This week saw us set the ‘Policeman’s Lot’ and ‘Climbing Over Rocky Mountains’ numbers, whilst moving onto singing through Cat Like Tread and the adjoining music with the men.

We only have a few bits left to learn and the whole show will have been blocked and sung through. It was always my aim to try and get everything set and learnt early and everyone has risen to the challenge. This means we’ll have lots of rehearsal time to run the show, polishing and adding extra little bits all the while.

On a personal note this show is proving an enjoyable challenge for me, the nature of the show means that I’ve had to do rather more choreography than I would normally, resulting in me locking myself in a room and fighting or dancing with myself. Thankfully when it all gets too much for me Fay’s on hand to make up some proper dancing.

Our version will be unlike many other ‘Pirates’ before it. Myself, Fay and Erika decided from the onset that we didn’t want this show to have a stuffy or concert feel to it. So often you see productions of the show where all the emphasis is on the singing and little consideration given to anything else. In our eyes this leaves a rather boring show. We want ours to be a real triple threat.

As the show is out of copyright it’s rather liberating as it means we can really put our spin on things. We’ve taken a much more MT approach to our version, we’ll let you be the judge, but we believe what we have is a much funnier, more entertaining version of the show with a modern feel. The show has so much scope for humour and we’re doing all we can to pack our version full of it, we’ve come up with some great characters and it’s great to see the cast develop these each week in rehearsals.

The next few weeks see us set ‘cat like tread’ and learn the finale section of act 2 then tie up the loose ends and duets which will mean we can start running the show.

I do hope you come to see the show, forget any preconceptions you may have of it, what we’re offering is a fresh fun take on a classic.

SMP Ravaged by Pirate Fever!

In a sad development. After 59 years SMP is set to close later this year after its members have developed a bad case of ‘Pirate Frenzy’, a major modern general condition that doctors have described as a terribly awful case of a seriously made up disease.

An artists impression of what the germs may look like.

An artists impression of what the germs may look like.

The frenzy, thought to be the rather ostentatious ‘King’ strain, is suspected to have been spread either by a combination of Trump and Brexit or by new members of the male chorus John Longsliver and Tarquin Bluebeard who joined the group in February.

New members: John Longsilver and Tarquin Bluebeard.

Suspicions were first aroused when people started bringing parrots to rehearsals, since then members have been seen hanging around the new river and plans were discovered by police for pillaging parts of Palmers Green.

The unfortunate parrots were maltreated by some members resulting in them becoming ex-parrots.

The unfortunate parrots were maltreated by some members resulting in them becoming ex-parrots.

In a worrying turn of events some members have even discussed self-mutilation in an attempt to out pirate their counterparts. One member, William Carls (name altered to protect identity), stated that “losing an arm, a leg, an eye and a hand is a small price to pay to reach piratical perfection”.

The frenzy has manifested itself in many ways with some members baking rodents in pastry, some setting up illegal radio stations and others selling badly filmed dvds of popular movies.

Members have made Pie-rats, turned to the dark arts of disc jockying and asked ‘You wan DVD?’

When asked about the groups future, Chairman Luke Clow said – “I used to feel at home onstage but now I long for the taste of seaweed in my teeth and salt in my hair. Once this show is over I’m selling up, buying a dingy and it’s a life on the waves for me.”

The group intend to set sail after the last performance on Saturday. Where they will take the opportunity to get married with impunity, and indulge in the felicity of unbounded domesticity. As they shall quickly be parsonified, conjugally matrimonified, by a doctor of divinity located in their vicinity.

Seriously, who would have a pirate themed wedding?

Pirates Blog – Week 7

Greetings dear readers of the Pirates Blog!

My name is David Bowman and there are those that call me the Very Model of a Modern Major General!

Usually at rehearsals, and when the script dictates, for that is the part I am to portray, and dare I say, to embody in our little show.

Admittedly there are not many occasions for them to do this.

But when they do, they do so in unison, in song and in some rather lovely harmonies!

This week has seen two more rehearsals full to the brim with that authentic SMP blend of studious attention to detail, and glorious hilarity!

On Monday the gentlemen of the cast, along with the irrepressible Jo Cooper who plays our Ruth, where put through their paces.

Our esteemed Director, Mr Warren McWilliams, guided us through a review of all the scenes so far covered.

I’m pleased to say he certainly bought that particular genius of his to bear cranking up the levels of police buffoonery and piratical hijinks!

The evening concluded in marvellous fashion with Jack McGinn, our dashing Frederick, and Jo Cooper delivering a truly rousing rendition of ‘Oh False One’.

Special mention here should go to our pianist Alex Cobavie, for altheticism, vigor and enthusiasm her playing brings to all of our rehearsals, and this accompaniment in particular!

Wednesday we repaired to Cannon House, where there’s always costume lurking in the attic, song wafting through the lounge and tea brewing in the kitchen!

A recap of the songs was led by our Musical Director – the incomparable Erika Gundesen.  In once more guiding us through the trickiest of Sullivan’s harmonic wrangling with tenacity, perseverance and consummate musicianship, but also with irrepressible good humour!

Indeed a splendid evening was had by all and we all left looking forward to the day that all this can be unveiled before you, our esteemed audience!

In conclusion, get your tickets, see this show, it’s going to be absolutely jolly marvellous!

Pirates Blog – Week 6

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr me hearties!

Greetings and welcome to the blog.  I’m Luke and I’m delighted to be bringing this week’s edition to you.  I’m so pleased we are doing this show, it’s always been one of my favourites as it was pretty much the very first musical I was ever part of waaaay back when I was but a young whipper-snapper.  Well the years have rolled by, but I still love Pirates of Penzance as much, if not more, than I ever did.

The music is fantastic – real proper singing that tests us to our limits and pushes us to be better which is always great.  These days, I like the show even more because you get just how silly and funny it is.  So – great show, great music, lots of funny stuff – and that’s before you factor in Mr Warren McWilliams adding his considerable talents to add more mayhem and hilarity, the fabulous Fay Kemal bringing out our best with some brilliant routines and the wondrous patience of Erika Gundesen who is slowly but surely getting us through the fabulously complex music.

So on Monday we were a rollicking band of Pirates as we set the opening to the show, much laughter and energy was brought to proceedings as we cavorted about, swilling from flagons of sherry and launching Jack McGinn (who plays Frederick) around.  By the end, we’d all worked up a good sweat and it looks like we should be opening the show with a bang and starting like we mean to go on!

Wednesday was a singing day, Erika (along with our fabulous pianist Alex) worked with us on ‘When the Foeman Bares His Steel’ which is in Act 2 and where I’ll be playing the Sergeant which is a really fun part.  This was one of 2 songs I sort of take the lead in, so a great rehearsal for me in getting this under my belt.  We also did some more work on some of the other numbers and we really started to crack the end of the Act 1 finale.  This is a massive 10 minute piece of music in multiple harmonies and is a bit of a nightmare when you first look at it.  However, once we crack it – it will sound A. MAZ. ING!  So very excitingly at the end of Wednesday we ran through the Act 1 finale from beginning to end, up to speed and you could really hear that the chaps were 95% there (no disrespect to the ladies, they were downstairs setting some dancing with Miss Fay – so this was a singing rehearsal just for the gents!).

We’ve been ploughing through the show at a good pace, and I think we’re due to go back for a few recap rehearsals which will be great.  Once we get everything together, bring the humour out, start belting out those harmonies and adding in all the fab bits and pieces being added on top – I’m confident this is going to be one of our best ever shows!

So what are you waiting for, shiver those timbers, splice the mainbrace and get booking your tickets now! Else we shall have to confine ye to Davy Jones’ locker!

Pirates Blog – Week 5

Aye, me hearties, and welcome to this week’s blog, by me, Archie (or “Roger the Cabin Boy” if you must)! And this week was a really big one too!

On Wednesday, we (Me, Jo and the rest) did Pour, oh pour and (I live or die a) Pirate King, which were two very easy songs and I loved them, as I’m sure everyone else did too.

Meanwhile, the other girls (the lovely daughters) were very busy trying to snatch a hoop off someone’s wrist whilst the other person was spinning it (I hope they were up to more than just that)!

We also had a visit from two talented people Ewan and Esub who are putting our flyer together for us, I can’t wait to see the finished thing.

Anyway, that was Wednesday, and (here comes the embarrassing bit) I… wasn’t there on Monday. But… Warren told me that I could go through other rehearsals, so here comes one from last Wed (the one before the one I was just talking about)… Act 1 finale!

Now, I have to say, as a professional, that the song was extremely difficult and complicated to learn, with… a many good different topics in it. But, my amateur dramatics (and true self, if you ask me!) self-screams out loud that that song was simply “a mess, like Gilbert and Sullivan had made this song for comic relief, deciding that the good thing to do would be to get all different genres of music, and mix them together like a lumpy cake mixture- the lumps in the cake mixture being all the places where the genres clashed-and just stick it into the otherwise magnificent play.”

I mean, come ON, one minute the pirates (me included) are getting all emotional, sobbing our hearts out over David Bowman’s being an orphan, and the next minute, we’re “hailing poetry”? In my experience, there is NO SUCH THING as “Hail Poetry!”

But we got through that sticky mess, and I’m sure we’ll be all the wiser for other songs like this (if there are more abominations like this) because of all the coaching that our amazing Erika Gundesen and magical Alex Cobavie (she is BOUND to become like Tchaikovsky-her skills are beyond bounds) have given us so far, and will all the way to the end of the play.

Also, I would like to say that Jamie Somerville, you are an OUTSTANDING actor and a brilliant singer-any play that you are in is instantly something I would want to watch, because the moment you start performing, regardless of whether you are standing centre stage hands-on-hips or backstage right sweeping dust out of a corner (though I doubt that if anyone sees your talent they would give you a role like the latter), everyone’s attention would be focused on you, because of the way you play a role in a comedic and amazing way, whilst still doing what the director wants you to do.

Please don’t be sad if I haven’t mentioned all of you in this; that doesn’t mean I don’t think you’re just as good as everyone else in our merry little group, it’s just I haven’t been working directly alongside you and it would be unfair to you for me to judge you.

Anyway, I hope you’ve managed to get through this blog without falling asleep (or yawning either-I know I’m not the most exciting person in the universe), and if you have, congratulations!

Here’s to many more Mondays and Wednesdays to come, Archie is out!

Pirates Blog – Week 4

So now it’s my time to write a blog. I haven’t done this since we started SMPs blog for Sleeping Beauty (and may I say I wrote SMPs first blog).

Well I have been involved with SMP since 2009 and let’s say – I love being part of such a wonderful, friendly and talented group. My favourite shows that I have performed in with SMP are The Wedding Singer, West Side Story and Our House. I was even lucky enough to direct Sleeping Beauty in 2016.

Pirates is a completely different show than I have ever been involved with. I will be playing the Pirate King’s lieutenant ‘Samuel’. Every time I have performed with SMP, it has brought a completely different challenge. Let’s just say Pirates certainly is a singing challenge, and we could not succeed with this if it wasn’t for our amazing musical director Erika, supported by our wonderful pianist Alex, who both have the patience of saints. They work us hard and when we get it right, it sounds phenomenal. Hail Poetry!

Monday we had a mixture of Dazography from our fantastic director Warren and choreography from our brilliant choreographer Fay. We set the entire (9 minute) finale of act 1 and such fun it was.

Wednesday was singing recaps with our pianist Alex. Additionally the men got to spend time with our costume duo Fay and Ellie – trying on a variety of ‘piratey’ clothes which included, see through blouses, very tight jumpsuits and frilly tops. Let’s just say your in for a treat.

Until next time where Archie will be filling you in for next weeks shenanigans. Book your tickets now – it’s never too early.

Pirates Blog – Week 3

SMPPOP

Hi all

My name is Jo and I will be playing Ruth in Pirates of Penzance. This will be my second performance with SMP, my first show being Beauty and the Beast in 2013, although I have helped out behind the scenes in Our House in 2013 and Urinetown in 2016. I can’t wait to get my teeth into this show as Gilbert & Sullivan operettas are something I love and have been dying to perform in one. I was super surprised and elated to get the role of Ruth.

Last Monday saw us staging some of the classic songs from Act 1 (with some of the best directing known to man according to our Director, Warren McWilliams), such as Modern Major General in which Dave Bowman (playing the General) has to really get his face in gear for those super fast lyrics! Staging is always done at the Intimate theatre which has been in existence now since 1937 and reportedly has its own ghost of a hooded monk which walks the aisle between the stalls, according to the theatre manager. I also love all things ghostly and have done since I was a kid- did I mention that? I did my first show at the Intimate when I was 7 years old and have long loved the traditional and authentic feel of the place.

We have been going great guns with Erika learning all the songs and the harmonies are coming together beautifully, helped greatly by Alex who plays the keyboard for us at rehearsal. I love this show as its got lots going on and musically is very hard to sing, but the resulting sound is worth all our effort. Its unusual to have so many men in our cast for this show and they have outnumbered the girls at rehearsals which is strange, but lovely. Its also great to have two very talented young men in our cast for this show, Jamie and Archie. Hopefully they will enjoy working hard on a fun show with our lively, friendly cast.

I have two little girls aged almost 7 and 3 and a half and they are helping me learn my songs. They follow me around the house singing and I am pleased to get them interested in Gilbert & Sullivan. My husband Richard helps me learn my lines so its a complete family affair. I’m grateful and lucky they support me and always come to my shows. Why not bring your family to see our show too? I’ll be handing over to Chris O’Shea next week when we will be staging our Act 1 finale and learning more wonderful harmonies.

Pirates Blog – Week 2

 Yahaargh me shiverin’ mateys!

Welcome to this installment of the captain’s blog! This be Horace the Unclean, aka Chunk; long standing member of the SMP crew, first time on stage in many a year and brand new contributor the show blog.

Let us now dispense with the pirate brogue!

This is the first show I have been on stage for since SMP’s ‘7 Brides for 7 Brothers’ in 2008, so beginning rehearsals with singing and dancing was a little trepidatious for me. I was delighted to have been told that I had passed the audition stage, but a little tremor of nerves soon struck! However at the first rehearsal I found myself surrounded by an excellent cast that I thought really nailed the singing of the first piece we attempted, and that immediately helped allay any fears I had and I was soon back in the swing of things.

I like the this particular combination of production team, and I think they have made excellent casting choices. This is going to be such a good show. The music is fantastic and the story is engaging and funny. This cast will really bring their characters to life.

This week’s rehearsals were a mixture of singing and dancing. I had forgotten how hard part-singing is, for me personally, but Erika is skilled in isolating what needs to be sung and coaching those of us that need it, with an easy-going approach and pleasant attitude. Everyone else seems to get it straight off the bat. Harder than that is remembering dance routines. Harder still: singing and dancing at the same time! Even at this early stage though, I can see the humour Fay is bringing into the male dance routines, and rehearsals have started strong giving us a good foundation for a first class show. This is pleasing to be involved with.

Monday’s rehearsal was at the historic and venerable Intimate Theatre, where SMP have been performing panto annually for many many years. It is quite a nice feeling to be rehearsing within an actual theatre space, right in front of the stage beneath the proscenium arch. I am looking forward to next week’s rehearsals, as I understand our illustrious director is taking over temporarily from the choreographer to make us move about the stage in daft and amusing ways!

Watch this space for the next rehearsal blog post, and buy some tickets! Tell yours friends to buy some tickets. Do not miss this opportunity to see this classic G&S musical.

Fair thee well, and keep a weather eye on the SMP website. Yahaargh!

Pirate Blog – Week 1 – Read Through and Auditions.

Ahoy there, me hearties!

Welcome to the first of our Pirates blogs. In these blogs we’ll be keeping you up to date with all the goings on during rehearsals and show week.

My names Warren and I’m directing the show. If you don’t know it, where have you been? ‘Pirates’ is a fabulous show which some great songs. It’s an old classic but we’re going to be giving it the full SMP treatment and squeeze out every ounce of humour that we can.

Starting a new show is always great fun and once again we welcome new members to the group, as well as some old faces that have returned and we thank the regular faces for being part of the show.

I’m really looking forward to working with the creative team of Erika (MD) and Fay (Choreographer) to put this show together and create something special and also looking forward to getting the ball rolling with our tech team, Ian (SM), Matt (Set), John (LX) and Phil (Sound) next week to make this show look good and run smoothly.

We had our read through on the Monday night and the creative team let everyone know our plans for the show, we also watched a load of clips from the show to get a feel for it, then it was onto auditions.

Our auditions were great, we didn’t have as many people as for past shows but those that came were of a really high standard and the result is a tight cast of super talented individuals to work with. Personally I’m looking forward to doing a lot of character work and the cast I have is a great bunch of talented actors who I know I will have plenty of fun with as we set the show.

cast list

At our first rehearsal we set out, under the guidance of Erika, to learn one of the Policeman’s songs. With so much singing in the show we have our work cut out for us but both Erika and the cast rose to the challenge and our first song sounds great.

Our new youngsters Archie and Jamie took their first SMP rehearsal in their stride and huge thanks must go to another newbie Alex who’s going to be playing piano for our rehearsals, gold dust!

Next week we start setting ‘When the foeman bears his stee’l and then it’s on to learning more new music!

Well that’s it for me, I’m really excited about this show, I’ve plenty of ideas and raring to work with the cast to start putting them in action. You won’t want to miss it.

Frosted Blog – The Post Show Blues…

Well, there you have it – panto is done for another year! I would say ‘oh no it isn’t’, but it definitely is and I’m sure I used that joke last year! Great fun was had by all, the cast, the audience, the tech team (yes I’m talking about your shenanigans in the stage left wing Aaron & Adam!) and show week flew past in a whirl.

I really felt like we upped our game this year even more, not only because Frosted took a fairytale story we’ve all come to know and gave it a panto twist, but also that the show managed to cleverly send up all those things that are traditional to panto without deviating from the traditional format too far (all very post-modern! Well done Warren on a fabulous script again).

During show week the girls were spoilt rotten by the lovely Linda, who was our very own tea fairy/biscuit queen and it has been hard coming to terms with the fact that I’ve got to do it all myself again now. Oh yes, and can anyone sort out rigging the snow effect in my lounge? It’s quite underwhelming to sing your heart out (to the cat obviously) and there be no epic snow effect on the crescendo….. please get in touch…. please!

The get out from the Theatre went smoothly, albeit a long one this year, but huge respect to our tech team for the massive efforts they go to, we wouldn’t look half as good without them and with great effects comes lots of equipment.

That first day after panto ends is always hard, invariably most of us go back to work and you get mixed emotions when 6pm rolls around that you are not at the Theatre and again at 8pm that you won’t see everyone for rehearsal – but oh the joy of putting on your pjs and getting an early night!

Some of us are lucky to put off the post show blues for another week with our annual visit to St Elizabeth’s in Much Hadham with the abridged version of the show, on the following Sunday. We were quite a big group this year and that may be what caused the madness that descended during the rehearsal that afternoon, we all got a bit over excited during Ellie & Sophie’s duet and somehow it turned into a impromptu show girl number complete with a full cast kick line! We won’t mention Greg dragging John across the floor by his feet!

The performance at St Elizabeth’s went well and there was plenty of audience participation and appreciation, we all enjoyed ourselves very much and were very grateful for the spread they laid on for us at the end – thank you so much for having us again!

The annual plays also had their first read through last week and again we are lucky enough to have an award winning writer providing us with a new work to showcase. Thank you Paul Levey! There was so much interest that a mini casting/audition panel was necessary. We are all looking forward to cheering them on at the Welwyn Garden City Festival, who made us so welcome last year. Good luck to Director Rebecca Gediking and the cast.

rally cry

Normally we would then get a bit of a break before embarking on our Summer show casting and auditions, but with the show dates being a bit earlier this year it was straight back in!

Pirates read through

The read through and general show info night for The Pirates of Penzance was held on Monday and our Director Warren pulled out all the stops. I have to admit I wasn’t sure how SMP would take on such a classic, but that’s where my lack of knowledge about the storyline let me form preconceptions about the show, which I now know were completely wrong!

Oh my goodness, I had no idea this show was so funny! Obviously a director’s vision can completely change a show anyway and Warren has a lot planned to wow our audiences with – it may have the same title, but be prepared for a completely different, modernised version of this classic.

We at SMP are never known to be shy and I can’t wait to see the casting and characters that are going to grace the stage! Along with Fay’s choreography and Erika as MD we have a top creative team In place. If you were not able to attend on Monday do not dismay ‘me hearties’! The auditions will be held on Sun 5th Feb with a few additional slots on Monday 6th if required, for more information please Click here to visit the page to find out all the info you need.

Frosted Blog – Show Week

From curtain up to finale bow this show week has been packed full of magical moments.

Of course, there have been some accidental trips on stage, bumps into scenery & the occasional fluffed line… A particular favourite being “Greetis Worthing Pheasants” (Michael Lacey, aka Prince Anders) but this has all added to the fun and silliness of show week and the joy of being part of Team Frosted.

As the audience sat back enjoying the show, they remained unaware of the madness backstage…

Dressing rooms filled with costumes, tiaras, clouds of hairspray, wigs, selfies, sweets, glitter, cake, laughter and a lot of tea…

Stage crew rushing around with scenery, checking cues, preparing props, helping with quick changes, keeping us all smiling with their ‘entertainment’ from the wings… and making lots of dreams come true as Princess Ella’s ice spell fills the stage & snow explodes up into the air & falls over the audience…

Of course, none of this would be possible without the incredible dedication, imagination and hard work of the Frosted Production Team: Luke Clow, Fay Kemal & Mike Benyon (our brilliantly talented Musical Director, who is celebrating his 25th pantomime with SMP!)

Being part of Frosted’s Ensemble has been a truly wonderful experience & I feel incredible lucky to be surrounded by such a talented bunch of ‘Frosticles’. Even in the chilly surroundings of the Intimate Theatre, you can’t help but be feel the warmth of the friendships & passion for performing we all share.

Although the curtain has fallen on the last performance at the Intimate, we are all looking forward to one more afternoon of fun when we perform next weekend at St Elizabeth’s Centre.

I know we will all miss the magic of this panto… But I’m sure somehow, we’ll all learn to ‘Let it Go’…

Frosted Blog – Opening Night!

Opening night feels like Christmas Eve!

After all the hours of rehearsal (which now don’t feel like enough hours) and all the technical preparation in the theatre earlier in the week, we finally get to show-off to an audience. Mistakes have been made, (lots of mistakes from me! 🙈) costumes mended and re-mended, cues have been rehearsed and tweaked and rehearsed again.

Now the real fun starts. The anticipation of opening night is wonderful.

Our audience last night was small but perfectly formed. They reacted, shouted, ooh-ed, aah-ed, boo-ed, cheered and squealed with excitement in all the right places.

I personally cannot wait to see the reaction of the littler members of the audience at our sold out matinees on Saturday and Sunday.

If you have any children who can stay awake long enough please bring them down tonight or Saturday night, I want as many children as possible to witness the pure magic that our production team and most importantly our technical team have worked on the end of act 1. . . and the rest of the show’s not bad either 😉

Lots of love

Frosted Blog – Preview Night

Hi, Scoop here feeding back on all the top stories from our preview performance last night!

Earlier in the week we received the news that our Saturday and Sunday matinees are sell out shows and that the Friday and Saturday evening performances are following suit.

With this information in our minds, we all arrived at the theatre full of excitement, ready to perform to our first audience, the World Premiere of ‘Frosted’ written by Warren McWilliams.

Our first performance went down a storm. We received wonderful comments from our audience and it was a magical evening for all.

Our actual opening night is tonight and before I disappear back to the world of journalism in Edmontonia, I will leave you with some insider information from ‘Frosted’.

Gossip: We have a tip off that Prince Anders is visiting Edmontonia for the coronation of our Queen Ella. I hope that he is as charming as he seems. I will certainly report back on his visit… swoon!

Fact: the character Jasper of Joysville is named after the writer Warren McWilliams’ son.

Top Tip: Join us for our performance tonight so that you don’t miss out! Failing that book your tickets for Friday or Saturday night before they sell out.

*** Don’t miss our show, please book your tickets. Both matinee performances are SOLD OUT tickets for Friday evening are limited. ***

We do have some returns for the matinee so please please ring 0844 414 2731 Or email SMPTickets@hotmail.com for availability.

Frosted Blog – Tech and Dress run.

Hey everyone, Jack here to fill you in with all the shenanigans from this week’s tech and dress run.

I will be playing the part of the reindeer with the wonderful Debbie, a role I was determined to play ever since it was announced at read-through.

We started the week off with the tech run on Monday. This was the first somewhat full run we had on the Intimate stage so some tweaking and adjustments were needed from the usual Canon House layout we were used to. This was also the first chance our stage team had to get to grips with all the set changes throughout the play and I must say they did a great job. By the end of the rehearsal we were having to skip through scenes so we didn’t go over the Intimate’s 11 o’clock noise rule, but in the end we got everything finished. We were pretty much all set for the final rehearsal.

Tuesday’s dress rehearsal went pretty much without incident. Everything ran fairly smoothly, which considering it was the first full uninterrupted run with band, lights, set and mics is quite an achievement. All numbers look and sound amazing, especially the act one finale, “let it go”, which I say will live up to the Disney version.

The writer of Frozen, sorry I mean Frosted, Warren McWilliams was in the audience and hopefully he was as pleased with the production as the cast and creative team are.

Doing this panto with SMP has been a great experience and something I have been meaning to tick off my bucket list for a while now. Having never done a pantomime in my life I thought this was as good an opportunity I would get to perform in one with a great script, great songs and a great cast.

I would just like to say thank you to everyone for making this a wonderful 4 months. Hope you all enjoy watching it as much as we enjoy performing it. It’s sure to be a nICE watch, don’t give us the cold shoulder and purchase some tickets.

Cheers, Jack

Frosted Blog – Get in and Band Call

Helloooo Michael here and I will be playing the role of Ander’s in this year’s Panto!

Well when I say playing.. I firmly believe Anders is actually is just an extension of me… He is ‘Charming, Gorgeous and damn right Hilarious!’.. But I will let you be the judge of that!

Anyway, this weekend (Sunday) was quite possibly one of my favourite days of the whole ‘Rehearsal/Show’ process, for this day is declared ‘GET IN DAY’ Get in day literally does what it says on the tin, this is where some members of the cast and all of the crew pull together to help off load the vans which are full of the wonderful sets, lighting and some other ‘special little surprises’ our fantastic Director Luke Clow has magiked from his brain to le stage (init)

Alongside of the get in we also have ‘Band Call’ there is always an element of excitement amongst the cast on this day as ‘Band Call’ is where we (the cast) finally get to hear all of the songs we have been singing for the past few months, played out with the band.

Our wonderful ‘Master of the Keys’ Mike Benyon has again (and again and again and again and again and … well you get the point Mike has done a lot of shows as MD for SMP) done a sterling job of being our MD for the show, Oh and the rest of the band aren’t too shabby either! (Tim Hall, John Fossey, Chris (Chunk) Wall and Paul Denham)

In the evening of ‘The Get In’ we all head to the theatre to put our costumes into our dressing rooms and then…. IT IS PIZZA TIME!! The cast and crew get their munch on and fest on pizza then proceed to sit around in a food coma’s (well the cast do, but the crew continue the hard work of building the set, genuinely a massive THANK YOU to each member of the crew for their hard work and dedication put into the intense days running up to the show!)

Once the cast have emerged from their food comas, its then time for us to jump on that stage and shake, shake, shake it to the beautiful Choreography laid down by the fantabulous Mrs Fay Kemal!

And this is where I love you and leave you!, but if you want to see all of the shenanigans happening during ‘FROSTED’ this year, you’d better go get yourself on t’internet/tefalone and book your tickets as they are selling faster than you can say ‘scone’

Frosted Blog – Week 16 (Last week of rehearsals)

This is Duke Wesley – yes, that’s Wesley not Weasley – aka Carl; and trying not to give much of the masterfully written plot away I also play Token – dubious accent and sauna owner.

So this is our last week of rehearsals meaning that the scary and exciting ‘get in’ is soon upon us. However, we still have two rehearsals to go. Monday morning comes – and my household still has the flu. This was probably caught whilst dancing through the streets of London for the New Year’s Parade dressed as Jacob Marley; well to be precise the last five minutes of drenching rain. Me/Jacob/Duke/Token ( I forget who I am at times) has pulled through and gets to rehearsals. Sadly, the illness has hit the King slash Andy slash my boyfriend badly and he has to stay at home shivering. This was my first time in 2017 seeing my SMP family and what an uplift these beautiful people were after a week of quarantine.  Run-throughs of the whole show are the plan for both of this week’s rehearsals. Polishing lines, routines and harmonies is the order of the day. There is a refreshed vigour in the air during these rehearsals and the energy and performance levels keep on rising exponentially.  The whole cast and crew are now busting to hear the band and get in the theatre!

I am also pleased to announce that the King/Andy/my Macho man despite being a bit sniffly got to the next rehearsal and make the cravats for the male chorus and sparkly lederhosen!
