Spamalot Blog – Week 4

Hi all, Luke here and I shall be playing King Arthur.

The show is already coming together nicely and I am loving riding around on my trusty steed (some say it’s less of a steed and more like a couple of coconuts being banged together) in search of the Holy Grail!

Having blocked through the dialogue in the past few weeks, this week we started getting cracking on some more of the songs and dances.

Monday we set the cheerleader number which looks fantastic as you can see from this snippet below:

On Wednesday we sung through a few songs including the cheerleaders cheer

and what may be my favourite song in the show, the amazing “Find Your Grail”. By the end of the evening it was sounding amazing and I left the rehearsal beaming from ear to ear.

There are some tricky “Ah ah” harmonies but our gloriously tanned MD has faith in us as you can see here:

We were excited to start looking at our costumes too as Fay, Ellie and Debbie are already hard at work pulling together the eclectic mix of costumes and tabards needed for the show.

We’re looking forwards to more fun at rehearsals this week and already I’m sure this show is going to be absolutely epic. Make sure to get your tickets as soon as you can, you don’t want to miss out!!

Spamalot Blog – Week 3

So it’s my turn to do the blog!

Hey everyone. My names Chris and I will be playing Sir Robin (who throughout the show tends to soil himself on many occasions.)

I originally saw Spamalot at the Palace Theatre in the West End in 2007 – where I fell in love with the hilarity of the show. From then on I knew it was a show that I wanted to be part of. Eleven years later – and here I am, rehearsing with SMP, who are not just a group, but an extended family.

We are extremely lucky to have a wonderful and talented production team – Fay, Stuart and Paula who have magical visions of the show. On Monday it was another dance rehearsal with Fay and of course our brilliant pianist Alex. Yet again, Fay pulls off another great comedic routine (which this show is full of).

The title says it all – ‘He Is Not Dead Yet’ – where Haydn (the man who is not dead yet) has the opportunity to dance his absolute socks off just before Warren (the homicidal brave Sir Lancelot) decides to knock him out with an umbrella (should be a shovel). Not to be missed.

Unfortunately, due to the weather, Wednesday’s rehearsal was cancelled. Paula did set us homework. Snowball fights (looking at song words was also somewhere in there I think).

You don’t want to miss this ‘SPAM’ of a show. Book your tickets, tell your friends, invite family, bring people and some more people. It will be ‘Spamazing’.

Book your tickets on the web before the Knight’s of Ni get them all. So when you’re feeling in the dumps, don’t be silly chumps, just book your tickets and whistle that’s the thing! Always look on the bright…. (gets knocked out by shovel).

BOOK BOOK BOOK!

Spamalot Blog – Week 2

It’s Carl here, part of the ensemble of SMP’s Spamalot.

You may remember me from last year’s show Pirates of Penzance, when I had my hand and arm chopped off; or possibly from Urinetown, when I was thrown off a building or from West Side Story when I was stabbed to death.

Well, there seems to be a theme in the parts that I have played and in Spamalot the theme continues. Only this time it happens twice and in quite bizarre ways (what would you expect from the Monty Python team). So, come and see this show cos I’m a dab hand at dying now!

I had my first dance rehearsal with the amazing choreography of Fay Kemal. For those of you unfamiliar with Spamalot, naturally, the opening number is a song about fish. To find out more you really must come and see us. It is simply marvellous in a mad way – just how SMP like it.

In our the next rehearsal, I’m not sure how but under the intelligent direction from our director, Paula Bland, we managed to get through all of Act 2.

Obviously, we will run our lines again and again but I felt this was a great sign of the hard work the production team and cast are putting into this show.

I am super excited about this show, not only cos I get to die on stage but I also get another chance to work with Stuart Piddington-Wall as musical director. We would have had a singing rehearsal last week but we was selfishly on his honeymoon.

The Spamalot Blog – Week 1

Hello, my name’s Warren and I’m lucky enough to be playing Sir Lancelot, the French Taunter and The Knight who says Ni in SMP’s production of Spamalot.

It’s been a couple of years since I’ve been part of the cast for SMP so it was great to get down to business this week with rehearsals. Once again new faces have joined the SMP family, familiar faces have opted to tread the boards for the first time and old faces have returned. The result is a talented bunch of people who are guaranteed to give you a great show.

Monday saw us singing the opening number, the fisch slapping song, Not dead yet and making a start on the offstage vocals for our Diva, the lady of the lake. We welcomed back our wonderful rehearsal pianist Alex as she ably aided our fabulous MD Stuart. With a good strong cast and a healthy dose of male voices we’re sounding good already. I love a rehearsal where it’s appropriate to bring a fish and so I particularly enjoyed Monday.

Elsewhere Paula and the wardrobe department had a meeting, with lots of costumes in this show both specific and random they have their work cut out. Us Knights of the Round Table were measured up so that our costumes could be started on. Personally I can’t wait to get my hands on my chainmail and I don’t think I’m alone in that feeling.

On Wednesday we went about blocking Act 1, Paula took us through the whole of the first half and we had the chance to start run some of the classic scenes we’ve been itching to sink our teeth into. One thing we noticed is just how much music is in this show, the songs come thick and fast with no huge sections of dialogue, handy as it means we don’t have tons of lines to learn!

Spamalot is a wonderful show and as a big Monty Python fan it’s such fun to be playing parts that I’ve been quoting since I was old enough to watch the films. Don’t fear if you’re not much of a Monty Python fan though, the musical still has lots to offer you, the songs have a wide range of styles and are topical and witty so you’ll still find plenty to enjoy. There’s lots of dancing too so all in all it’ll be a real spectacle.

That’s all for this week!

Tickets are already selling and you can buy them in advance by clicking the link below. Look forward to seeing you at the show!

The Spamalot Blog – Read Through, Auditions and First Rehearsal.

Hi there, My name’s Paula and as Director I get the fabulous job of starting off the Spamalot blog. A weekly dip into what’s going on behind the scenes of the fab show you will need to book tickets for, as I think this one will be a sell out.

We started off with a great turnout for the information evening and read through, the laughter in the room as we read the hilarious script was contagious. Audition parts were discussed and sign up sheets were filling up quickly as everyone realised this was going to be fun.

I am super excited to be directing this show alongside a fab team, with Fay McWilliams choreographing and Stuart Piddington-Wall as MD.

Stuart guided the auditionees through the audition songs at our next evening and the excitement and nerves started to kick in as auditions were only a few days away.

Audition day came and the team and lovely helpers are eager to go. Alas we had no key to the chair cupboard and with only 1 chair available Stuart was allocated that as he had to play the keyboard? A talented man as Stuart could’ve stood but then I remembered I had my pitch side chair in the car, so I let him have the chair.

Poor Lisa and Fay were left standing and squatting. But hey, I am the director. We got the key and things we’re looking up, we were off.

Auditions were of a very high standard and we were thrilled with each and every one, which made our decision making very difficult. After a lot of discussion we had our cast and wow what a cast it is. The phone calls were made, the flow of emails started as the planning and meetings are full steam ahead.

I eagerly wait for news of the Facebook cast page so I can (as director you know) welcome the cast and give important information out. Apparently the page was up and running but I was not added, I repeat I……. the director……..was not added? We won’t go on about that, I’m over it now.

Anyway, Our first rehearsal was a great start in welcoming new members to SMP and we found out lots of interesting facts about all of our cast members. Invisible horse riding was practised, script was read (more laughter) schedules were given out and I’m looking forward to the first singing rehearsal on Monday. Stay tuned for more weekly insights from the spamalot cast.

Paula – the director – I thank you

Casting announced for the Welwyn Drama Festival.

Once again we’ll be taking part in the 84th Welwyn Drama Festival held at the Barn Theatre, Welwyn Garden City, on 21-26 May 2018

This Year we’ll be entering two plays written by our very own award winning playwright Paul Levy. The plays, titled ‘An Order of Lunacy’ and ‘House Proud’ will both be getting their debuts at the festival.

An Order of Lunacy. Set in England, 1842, tells the story of a successful ‘mad-doctor’ who arrives at Wright Manor for what he believes to be a straightforward insanity assessment of two sisters, only to be warned by a fellow professional that the cases may be far more complex than he first thought.

House Proud sees tenants become pitted against one another as a row breaks out over what should be acceptable in a house in modern day Britain.

We’ve held auditions and both plays have been cast and we’re pleased to announce they are:

An Order of Lunacy will be directed by Rebecca Gediking and David Bowman will direct House Proud, Paul will still have an involvement with both plays as usual as our author.

Find out schedules and all the details about the festival by clicking the image below.

Our show blog will be back next week keeping you up to date each week with all the goings on during rehearsals and the show itself.

Lovingly ripped off from the hugely successful 1975 film, ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’, Spamalot follows King Arthur, his squire Patsy and the Knights of the Round Table as they embark on their epic search for the Holy Grail. Featuring killer rabbits, flatulent Frenchmen and the knights who say… Ni!, this musical will have you looking on the bright side of life!

The Mermaid Blog – Much Hadham and the PSB’s.

Hola criaturas del mar, Dr love reporting to you all, well that’s a wrap !!!!

Sad to say. Much Hadham is always a pleasure to do and brings joy to those who absolutely love watching it, I always enjoyed it all those years ago when SMP first started going there. The people are so welcoming and generous, laying on food and refreshments for us.

This is the last blog!!! “Oh no it’s not” ” oh yes it is” !!! Boo, and what a wonderful experience it has been from start to finish. All the hard work paid off, thanks to all the production team. Michael’s vision, Jo’s slick and imaginative dance moves, Mike’s talent as an MD, Fay and co’s hard task at costumes, the wonderful lighting, the fantastic set, all the stage crew and not forgetting the writer of such a great panto Warren McWilliams.

The show’s been a great success, over 1300 people were entertained, we added an extra performance, our 11am matinee, which we’ll look to repeat next year tailored to our younger audience, we did 3 shows in one day for the first time, saw new members joining, old ones returning, a debut for a script, director, and an original song all from SMP and had a blast while doing it. Thank you for all your support and for reading this blog, without you we wouldn’t be able to do what we enjoy doing so much.

The blog will be back for our next show! If you want to be part of  Spamalot, then it’s not too late to join. Auditions are this Sunday. If you’re interested then get in touch and we can help you out with what you need. There are more details about the show here: http://smp.snowhosting.co.uk/spamalot-introduction-auditions/

The Mermaid Blog – Show Week and The Get Out

Hi, I am Carla and have just had the best week ever playing Sandy, a mermaid sister in SMP’s mermazing production of The Little Mermaid, an original script by Warren McWilliams with the fantastic production team of Mike Benyon as MD, choreography by Jo Bakhurst and directed by Michael Lacey.

The cast have had a ball singing and dancing our hearts out, getting the audience cheering, booing and tapping their feet. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive with comments like “best show ever”, “worthy of the west end”, “colourful and exciting”.

The costumes, lighting, set and props were expertly resourced and pulled together to make a truly fabulous show. Hearing the children clap and cheer and see their faces light up as their favourite characters appear on stage makes your heart swell.

I have had the privilege to play a number of roles in SMP’s shows and plays since I joined 10 years ago but this has been my favourite – I am living the dream of glitter, sequins and ballet shoes. Sadly though the final curtain call has happened and although we all stole many extra bows we have had to pack up and put the magic away until next time.

Saturday was a big day with 3 shows back to back as we added an 11am performance, the audiences for all the shows were fab and gave us all the energy we needed. We then headed out to our party on Saturday night which was enjoyed by all. We have our special awards ceremony which sees lots of lunging and some dubious prizes awarded then we dance the night away.

The tech team, who have been brilliant all week, have been shifting set pieces, moving lights and dismantling the rigs – a huge job!

Despite 7 shows in a long week spirits are still high during the get out and everyone chips in to do their bit.

We’ve been sweeping dressing rooms (there was a lot of glitter!), folding backdrop clothes and returning props – to Big and Red storage who are great partners to SMP.

Cloth folding takes on a new competitive edge under the guidance of referee Adam Humphreys as these videos show.

Perhaps it’s tiredness or the dust but folding cloths can have rather peculiar effects on people.

Putting on a show takes many people and we are so grateful to all of them for giving up their time and talents to us. It has been a magical week and although I desperately want to keep my costume on it is time to say goodbye.

The Mermaid Blog – Opening Night

Good afternoon your fabulous readershipnesses! Crusty here! Also known as Rebecca.

I am thrilled to be writing the opening night blog for the first ever production of The Little Mermaid – written by Warren McWilliams.

This is my first time playing a villain and though being booed is normally a bad thing, I’m really enjoying it.

It’s very liberating to be able to pick your nose on stage and flick it into the audience! Oh wait… the Director Michael Lacey has just asked me to stop doing that grrrr!

It has been amazing rehearsing for this show and it is so wonderful to now be performing it! The energy and buzz from everyone involved is infectious and I’m loving every minute!

The production team, band, crew, costumers and cast have created something very special and I am proud to be a part of it.

Audience members last night described the show as a spectacle with some commenting that it’s the best one they’ve seen to date! So come on down and enjoy the spectacle, cheer us boo us, sing and dance with us as we continue onto our next performances.

I promise I will only flick the gourmet bogies your way.

You can book your tickets here, if you want to come to one of our 2.30pm matinees please book now as tickets are limited for those performances:

The Mermaid Blog – The Community Night

Hello my poor unfortunate souls. Octavia here, also known as Kate Sanders, and I’m here to tell you all about our first performance, community night!

Community night is always very exciting, as it is our chance to not only meet lots of wonderful people from our local community, but also to perform our show in front of people for the first time. Here was where we got to talk to the children, make the audience laugh, and in my case revel in the boo’s.

The audience joined us on our magical journey, and after the show were wonderful to talk to, and hear about all their favourite bits. My favourite part is personally the act 1 finale, where I get to be my most evil self and sing an iconic number from the well known Disney version of The Little Mermaid. Can you guess what it is? Well you better book tickets so you can see if you’re right!

The cast and crew really came together for the show, and the excitement throughout was tangible. At the end of the show we had our traditional on stage ‘shell-fie’, which we do every show, and I may have pulled some rather odd faces on porpoise 😛

I’ll leave you all now as I have to wash all the glitter out of my hair (there is a lot of sparkles in this show!). See you at the show!

You can book your tickets here, if you want to come to one of our 2.30pm matinees please book now as tickets are limited for those performances:

The Mermaid Blog – The Dress Rehearsal

I am delighted to be playing Shell, one of Mariel’s mermaid sisters and have the absolute pleasure of sharing the details of the Dress Rehearsal…

For us mermaids, last night was the last chance to test the strength of our glue-gunned, sequinned and sparkly shell bras – and hope none of us mer-sisters experience a ‘Janet Jackson’ style wardrobe malfunction…

It was our final opportunity to ‘drill’ quick changes and perfect our ‘contortion-like’ manoeuvres to successfully remove and replace costuming whilst maintaining hair and make-up perfection!

The Dress Rehearsal was also the last chance to troubleshoot what we could, and be ready to react to any thrown lines, costumes or limbs coming your way… yes, the Intimate Theatre stage IS just that – intimate… and whilst we have had plenty of space in rehearsal, now we feel rather like sardines…

Fortunately, we have had a couple of costume runs before tonight, so any, ahem, kinks should be ironed out by now… and any final adjustments completed.

Costume ‘Scene Recovery plans’ are ready – in case, for whatever reason, said costuming should decide to abandon it’s wearer (this has been hats, wigs, and even skirts in previous shows…!)

You’ll be pleased to hear that the dress run was a great success & seeing the set, costumes, lighting and overall creative vision of our awesome production team finally come to life was absolutely magical!

I can’t believe this is Mike Lacey’s directorial debut! He has produced an absolute corker of a show – packed with musical magic from the awesome Mr Mike Benyon, and spectacular dances from our fabulous fire cracker of a choreographer Jo Bakhurst

Together, they’ve added some serious sass and sparkle to this magical ‘tail’… So, what are you waiting for? Come and join SMP under the sea! Xx

You can book your tickets here, if you want to come to one of our 2.30pm matinees please book now as tickets are limited for those performances:

The Mermaid Blog – The Tech Run

Today was our Technical Rehearsal, an extremely significant milestone in any SMP show!

This is the chance our excellent technical team have to really get their hands on the production. It is the chance to make sure that everything is able to run to our often elaborate plans.

By the time our cast arrived in the evening the Stage Manager Alex, Lighting Designer Matt, Sound Engineer Phil and their teams, have spent the entire day in the theatre perfecting their setup – plotting lights, testing levels, planning set changes and running a lot of cables!

Once all the cast have made it to the theatre, watch out for the roadworks on Green Lanes, we set about running the show, but stopping, starting and occasionally skipping were necessary to allow the crew the opportunity to ensure that everything works once the timings, movements and voices of the cast are factored in.

There were several impressive effects that took a concerted effort from everyone present and made full use of the considerable talents available!

We won’t give anything away, you’ll have to be in the audience to see what takes place – have you booked your seats yet?!

All in all a demanding and intense day, but we still found a chance for a few laughs along the way, and we’re extremely proud of we have all achieved together for this amazing show!

You can book your tickets here, if you want to come to one of our 2.30pm matinees please book now as tickets are limited for those performances:

The Mermaid Blog – Get in and Band Call

The excitement of band call/get in day is like Christmas Eve! There’s a tightly coiled spring of nerves in the pit of your stomach that leave you slightly delirious with anticip . . . . ation!

The very first time running through all the musical numbers with the band is without doubt one of the BEST feelings of show week. The dances come alive, the emotions in each and every song are heightened, it is one of my favourite parts of show week!

It was a long long rehearsal with the band going through all the songs and running the show. Our evil villain showed her softer side too with some appropriately decorated cakes. Though we weren’t sure whether to trust her and eat them or not.

While we’re doing the band call and running the show our tech team were busy at the theatre putting all the set and lighting up.

When we got to the theatre the tech crew were still beavering away making everything on stage look amazing and making everything work as it should do! We are so lucky to have so many pros working on our panto. We finished the day getting onstage and looking as some of the spacing for our the big dance numbers.

Still loads of work to be done before opening night! Can’t wait for tomorrow’s technical rehearsal!

You can book your tickets here, if you want to come to one of our 2.30pm matinees please book now as tickets are limited for those performances:

The Mermaid Blog – Week 16 (Last week of rehearsals)

The Little Mermaid Blog

Hi there fellow land-dwellers, and welcome to this week’s The Little Mermaid blog! My name’s Ellie and I’ll be taking you through what we’ve been getting up to this week, our FINAL REHEARSAL WEEK before curtain up… eek!

I say fellow land-dwellers because this year I have the absolute delight of being part of the chorus – a first for me in SMP panto and it’s been such a treat! That means that whilst I am not a mermaid I do get to play various different roles: so many, in fact, that I have seven costume changes in Act 1 alone!

Doing chorus in panto is so much fun as you get lots to do and are involved in all the big production numbers. It’s been lovely to dust off my dancing shoes at rehearsals with our choreographer extraordinaire, Jo Bakhurst, who has put us through our paces with lots of exciting, high energy and creative routines.

The team have chosen a great selection of songs this year, and we have been ably guided through learning them by our superstar MD, Mike Benyon, who has made us promise that we will remember to sing our harmonies properly even once we have all our costumes on and are spinning around on stage. Speaking of costumes, I have to give a huge shout out to our costume ladies – Fay, Ellie and Debbie – who have really outdone themselves this show. We’re so colourful and sparkly, and it’ll look even better under stage lights!

Both Monday and Wednesday nights this week saw us running the show from start to finish under the watchful eyes of our production dream-team, the final member of which is Michael Lacey, making his directorial debut. Not that you’d know it’s his debut: he’s done an incredible job and should be very proud of the finished product (disclaimer: he may be my best friend, but he hasn’t actually paid me to say that).

The whole team have put in an insane amount of hard work. Running the show twice this week has allowed us to iron out any bumps and the show really is looking fabulous. As usual the script, written by Warren McWilliams, is flawless, packed with hilarious fish-related puns that the whole family will enjoy and laugh at for weeks to come (he did pay me to say that).

I often get a little bit emotional at our final rehearsal before show week – I know, loser – but it’s so rewarding to see all of the hard work pay off and to see the production team happy.

On that note, I need to go and start ironing my costumes before we get into the theatre on Sunday – if I start now I should be done by then! Make sure you don’t miss out on this one: see you at The Intimate Theatre NEXT WEEK!

The Mermaid Blog – Week 15

Hello fellow land dwellers. Prince Derek here, also go by the name Jack, to give you the low down on this week’s little mermaid shenanigans.

Wednesday was our first rehearsal in 2 weeks due to Christmas and New years. It was a chance for us to shake off some of the festive cobwebs we had gotten. We ended up running as much of the show as we could within the 2 hours, and in spite of the 2 week break, it all still looked rather good.

Sunday turned out to be a rather long one and saw us rehearsing from 2-8 (or 10-8 in Maestro Mike Benyon’s case). This was something the production team thought had to be done to make up for the rehearsal time we lost during the snowy weather, and I think the entire cast agreed. This was also the last chance for us the dress run the show before show week and the final opportunity for costume extraordinaire Faye to figure out if anything was missing.

All in all it was a very productive week of rehearsals for us and sees us going into our final rehearsal week in good spirits.

This is definitely going to be a show not to miss. And I recommend you get your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

Signing off, Your Prince.

The Mermaid Blog – SMP take part in the LNYDP 2018

Greetings wonderful blog readers and sea creatures alike!

My name is Lucy and I am playing Mariel – strangely familiar name isn’t it 😛 – in SMP’s ‘The Little Mermaid’ this month! (Is it actually this month – eeeek!) I have to say that this role and this show have been an ABSOLUTE dream come true. I grew up watching The Little Mermaid on repeat, and to to this date it is my all time favourite Disney movie.

To be playing such a beloved character amongst an incredible team of cast & crew is an incredible honour, and simply MER-mazing!

This week we had an incredible opportunity and experience representing the Borough of Enfield in the London New Years Day Parade. This was SMP’s second time representing Enfield and my first time taking part.

The theme this year was ‘Circus Showtime’ and we decided (unsurprisingly) to go full throttle with our huge array of freaks and circus weirdo costumes.

We, never being one to miss a promotional opportunity, included a mermaid as the feature on our float of circus freaks, but also had a vast collection of other performers, including a bearded lady, a two-headed man, a fire acrobat and the extremely popular head-in-a-box. The costumes and character ideas were provided by the wonderful Fay, with lots of input and creativity from the performers themselves. If I do say so myself, we looked FIN-TASTIC, with such varied yet distinct-looking characters. Our float looked the part too thanks to the handy work of Matt McManus who’s artistic talent is matched only by his building prowess.

We had a phenomenal time throughout the parade, singing and dancing along to our chosen soundtrack (Madness – what else?), interacting with the audience along the parade route, and were even more chuffed to find out later in the day that we placed 9th in the competition! It really was a fabulous end to the best day, and I hope SMP are able to take part in the LNYDP for many years to come!

Here’s our performance for the judges.

Here’s the whole parade, You can find our performance onward from 02.30.00

Make sure you grab your tickets to come and join us under the sea during ‘The Little Mermaid’ this January – you are NOT going to be disappointed!!
